A likeable heroine starting over, a gorgeous and hugely alpha hero, a sexy, swoony romance that is super functional, great side characters and a bit of a mystery storyline thrown in as well – it’s all win, and I thought it was great fun.

25 year old November has not had an easy life – her mother is a heartless troll, her childhood was defined by neglect and abuse, her heart was broken and after she was viciously attacked while walking down the street she decides it’s time to start over. So she packs up her life in New York City and heads to Tennessee to live with the father that has only recently come into her life. Welcomed with open arms, November finds the family that she has always longed for, as well as a job doing the books for her father’s business. And just as she’s starting to find her feet, along comes Asher Mayson.

Asher is gorgeous, outspoken and confident, with a reputation as a bit of a manwhore around town. He is the oldest of four brothers, all very similar to him and all very close (and each getting a book of their own in this series – squee!). Asher, like his father and his grandfather before him, is smitten by the woman he knows will be his from the moment he sees her, and for him that is November. So from the moment they lay eyes on each other, it’s all about the chemistry.

“You’re a jerk, you know that, right?” I say with my arms crossed over my chest.
“You already said that, babe.” I swear, I can see a smile on his face. “But if you would have just agreed to get in my jeep, we would not be having this conversation.”
“Why do you even want me to come?” I ask in a huff.
“I’m not ready to have you out of my sight.”
“Why?”
“Because I’m interested.”

Yep, he’s a big, brash alpha, but November has some sass so there’s some great banter as these two get to know each other. It’s all very Kristen Ashley-esque, with Asher throwing November over his shoulder, calling her “babe”, declaring they’re in a relationship and practically moving her into his house without so much as batting an eye. He even talks like a KA alpha! But I love the caveman thing, I find it highly entertaining, so I lapped it up.

“I realized yesterday that I needed to stake my claim before some stupid fuck got to you. That’s why I did what you called ‘kidnapping’. I like to call that ‘securing my future.’ We’re going to see where this goes, November, and while we’re doing that, it’s not going to be casual.”

And, of course, he’s as hot as all hell. The sexy time is sizzling, and things very quickly become serious between these two. It’s a fantastic relationship, with the perfect mix of fiery, sexy and sweet, but totally functional with no angst, no stupid behaviour, and no outside interference. They’re together, they’re happy and they build something special and that’s that. AND I LOVED IT!

“I love you. You’re it for me. I knew from the moment I met you that I was done for. I like having you here and I don’t see that changing, unless you don’t feel the same as I do? Then you need to tell me so that I can convince you that you do.”

Reynolds has given us a wonderful love story. November is a great heroine – tentative because of her past and what she’s been through, but brave enough to embrace a new life and everything that comes with it, I really liked her. And then there’s Asher, and OMG I love him! Yes, he’s a total caveman, but he’s so madly in love with November and beautifully protective of her. It’s gorgeous to read.

But there is still drama going on – somebody is intent on getting to November, and with her dodgy past, and a very real threat which seems to have followed her all the way to Tennesee, Asher isn’t about to sit back and let his girl get hurt. It’s not a major part of the story, but it’s enough to keep things interesting, and it’s worked into the overarching story well. It also helps to bring a bit of excitement towards the end as it builds to its inevitable climax.

The side characters are all worked into the story beautifully. Both November and Asher’s families are all up in their business, and are a great bunch. I loved getting to know Asher’s brothers, and with second brother, Trevor’s story hinted at throughout the book, I’m excited to read on.

I did find the KA similarities to be a bit much at times – not just the nature of the relationship, but the way Asher behaves, the way he talks, and even the dynamic between the two of them – it felt like it could have been taken straight from a KA story. I love KA, her stories really work for me, and at first I really enjoyed the likeness, but as it continued on, I would read whole dialogues that could have been taken directly from one of her books, and I admit that I found it a bit distracting. Also the timeline jumps around a bit, so it’s not as smooth as it could have been. But for a debut novel I was really impressed.

All in all, I thought this was a really fun read. It’s sexy and romantic, funny and sweet, with a bit of mystery/suspense. I love the characters, loved their story, and I thought the ending and the epilogue were both perfect. I can’t wait for more.

4 stars.

The Until series

<img
