A witty, sweet and sexy forbidden-ish, single parent romance, this book made me laugh out loud, and I fell in mad love with the characters, and I loved it!

This is the second book in the Brodie Brothers series, and is the story of baby Brodie brother, Dylan. Dylan is an actor who became famous by playing the younger brother of the lead actor in a Disney kid’s show (providing a fabulous tie in to the Name in Lights series – and setting up some great cameos in this one), and he has worked consistently as an actor/model since then, though hasn’t reached mega-stardom.

Dylan has a bad habit of falling for his co-stars – like… all of them, and he constantly gets his heart broken when filming is over and the relationships fizzle out. It’s a running joke in his family, and his frequent falling in love but never being able hold on to it has him in therapy to try and deal with constantly having his heart broken.

Scarlett is a therapist whose life is just as messed up as her clients’. She’s a single mother to an adorable eight-year-old son, with a douchey ex-husband who cheated on her (and who happens to be an actor in a TV show). She’s still figuring herself out, but she’s smart, funny and relatable, and I loved her.

Dylan and Scarlett met three years previously. Their attraction was instant and they had a flirtatious encounter that didn’t end up going anywhere because Scarlett was very newly divorced, and Dylan was way too young for her. But neither of them have been able to forget about the other, having many fantasies over the years from just their one encounter. And now, Dylan has contacted Scarlett, without knowing that she is his old crush, to ask her to take him on as a client.

I do have a client who just moved to Idaho, so I have one slot available. Do I want to fill that slot with Dylan Brodie?
I pour myself another glass of wine.
Yes. Yes, I do want Dylan Brodie to fill my slot.
Is it a bad, terrible, very bad idea for me to even consider treating Dylan Brodie as a patient?
Yes. It is bad. Terrible. Very bad.

It’s a great set-up, and from the moment that Dylan steps through Scarlett’s door again, it begins. His shameless flirtation is so freaking entertaining, and the more Scarlett tries to keep things professional, the harder he pushes. It’s fun and funny, the forbidden angle brings some laughs, and I loved the chemistry and bubbling sexual tension as the anticipation built. Scarlett is determined to do the right thing, but Brodie (and her feelings for him) prove to be irresistible, and when she steps aside as his therapist, it’s all on.

The romance is fun, sexy and gorgeously honest. They know what they want, and they don’t hide from it, they just dive on in, and it’s fantastic to watch. I loved these two together so much

Dylan is so gorgeous. He’s so sarcastically funny, confident yet self-deprecating, and I love his soft heart. He is a sweet, loving, caring guy who wants love but just can’t hold on to it, and his openness, vulnerability and sense of humour over the whole thing is absolutely irresistible – as is his mad love for his newly-acquired kitten.

My girl’s all curled up in a furry gray ball, fast asleep. I guess it would be mean to wake her up just because I want to cuddle with her. I guess that would make me a bad cat parent. With an anxious attachment style. Maybe kittens and therapists should stop being so fucking cute if they don’t want me to adore them so much.

Once again, his brothers and parents are a big part of the story, and I’m madly in love with the entire Brodie clan. Sarcastic and absolutely hilarious, their text conversations are one of my favourite parts of the book, and I laughed out loud so many times at their epic banter.

Note – This is more an excerpt than a quote. I tried so hard to narrow it down, but couldn’t pick my favourite part, the whole conversation had me laughing so hard…

Spoiler

MILES: I’m watching your cologne commercial, Pretty Boy.
DYLAN: I think you mean my cologne-related cinematic art.
MILES: Actually, I meant Joli Garçon.
DYLAN: It’s just called Garçon.
OWEN: Yeah, I saw that on the interweb the other day. What a fantastic little character he is, I just loved him!

There is a little bit of drama as Dylan and Scarlett come to terms with their issues from previous relationships and find their way past it, but it’s well written, and works so well for them as characters and progresses their relationship beautifully. This is a beautifully functional romance that made me laugh so many times, and I just adored these two characters and their love story.

I’ve felt this, the falling, before. So many times. But for the first time ever. I know I have a safe place to land.

Such a fantastic read, I’m so excited for big brother, Myles’ story up next!

4.5 stars!

An Advanced romantic comedy novels, Kayley Loring got a BFA in creative writing from a Canadian university and had a fifteen-year career as a screenwriter in Los Angeles (under a different name). She mostly wrote PG-13 family comedies that studios would pay her lots of money for and then never make into movies. In 2017 she decided to move to the Pacific Northwest and write about all the fun stuff that she wasn’t allowed to write about in those PG-13 scripts. Now she’s breathing cleaner air and writing dirtier words. It’s an adjustment she’s happily getting used to.

Instagram | Facebook | FB Reader Group | Website | Newsletter | Audio Newsletter | BookBub

Attachment Theory by Kayley Loring is live, and free in Kindle Unlimited Fall in love with Dylan and Scarlett today!
