Even though he’s the tech genius behind the most successful matchmaking app of all time, it seems as though Doctor Love is able to predict everyone’s perfect partner except his own.

All that changes when a beautiful, intelligent, quirky-as-hell woman crashes into his life. Put all of that together, and he is the man behind a new app designed to help people find their soulmates. It’s a matchmaking app that is scientifically designed to measure compatibility between two people, and it’s foolproof, giving him the nickname ‘Dr Love’, which is a name he hates, and that couldn’t be further from the truth.

My love life is like that game where you flip cards over to try and make a match, but the cards are on fire, and the table’s on fire, and everyone is in hell.

Toby meets Joanna during a test-run for his app, and sparks fly instantly. They share an immediate connection, and after a night spent flirting and bantering, Toby is absolutely smitten, and Joanna seems to feel the same. These two are so cute together, I loved their witty banter, and I was feeling everything that was brewing between them.

I’m trying to keep my optimism in check, because getting too invested before I know our score is mightily stupid. But when just walking next to someone is this thrilling, you know you’re a goner.

But according to Toby’s app, they aren’t compatible. Not even close. Toby is stunned, and Joanna seems devastated, and things sort of fall apart for a bit. Neither of them are willing to risk their fragile hearts on a relationship that is doomed to fail. But they realise that they’d rather be in each other’s lives as friends than not at all, and in a bizarre set of circumstances, Toby ends up moving in to Joanna’s apartment (as roommates only), setting up a fun and angsty dynamic where they become the closest of friends… while secretly wanting each other more than anything else on earth.

Sparks of tension are swirling all around us, filling the air with all the things we’re not addressing. Most of the time, we’re as comfortable as life-long friends. But every now and then, it’s like even the most innocent of remarks will give away more than we can bear, so we clam up.

If you’ve read Leisa Rayven before, then you’ll know that she can bring the angst, and oh, she brought it in this book! It’s with a dose of humour, but the intense feelings and sense of longing between these two just drips off the page! I’m all for a good build up, and love the epic sexual tension, but this book tested my limits, because they are clearly so perfect for each other, yet we watch them dance around it, date other people, and stubbornly refuse to give in to the chemistry that is so evident in every single moment of them together. There is so much love between them, but for their own reasons they keep their distance, and as much as I was loving their story, I started to get frustrated and zone out a little bit, wanting one of them to actually fight for each other!

Joanna is very secretive. It’s clear she’s hiding things, and that there is more going on with her than what we originally know, and I was fascinated as pieces of her are revealed throughout the book. But for me, Toby absolutely shines as our narrator and romantic hero. He’s smart, funny, he is self-aware and admits his vulnerabilities, and his inner dialogue is hilarious, heartfelt and so very entertaining. He is so in touch with his feelings, and as a romantic hero he is caring, protective, supportive and so freaking swoony. I just adored him!

“You’re worthy of all the love in the world. You just have to believe that. Let yourself be loved. Let me love you.”

As the story progresses, there is a side storyline that grows in significance, and Toby and Joanna find themselves swept up into an intriguing and dramatic twist to their journey. It brings even more drama and intensity to their situation, cracking open secrets and forcing them both to confront some serious issues, and I thought it was really nicely woven together, and reignited my excitement for these two together after the lag that occurs in the middle of the book while they’re just dancing around each other.

When you’re so in love with someone you can’t imagine living without them, everything changes.

The big emotional moment comes with drama, passion, intensity and heartclenching swoon, and a feeling of rightness (though it took way longer than I was hoping for). But the build up is worth it for the beauty that is Toby and Joanna together, and though they have things they need to work through, I loved seeing them finally find their way to each other.

“I’m so fucking in love with you, I can barely breathe.”

Characters from the previous book appear. Both Toby and Joanna are individually best friends with Eden (heroine from book #1 in the series, Mister Romance, and both she and Max are there on the sides of the story. We also get glimpses of Jake and Asha from Professor Feelgood. And beloved Nanabeth and her duck are even there – dolling out advice, and being the supportive, badass grandma that she is).

I did love this book. It’s a bit angstier than I like, but that’s just me. The characters are gorgeous, the banter and feels are completely on point, and the romance – when we get to it – is absolutely beautiful.

4 stars.

An Advanced Review Copy was generously provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Masters of Love

Mister Romance (#1) (Max & For an eighteen-dollarish glass of whiskey, it’s not bad. When I glance at Eden, I see her eyes have glazed over. I follow her gaze across the room to where her boyfriend is talking to one of the test couples. As if he feels her staring, Max turns, and the expression he gets makes me shake my head. Pretty sure I’ve never looked at a girl like that, but I’d like to.

I wonder what it must be like to be that much in love. The way they’re looking at each other … the chemistry is so thick, you can almost see it shimmering in the air. It’s like there’s no one else in this entire place but them. Whenever I witness the passion between Eden and Max, I wonder if that sort of depth of emotion is reserved for a lucky few. Will everyone get to feel something that powerful during their lifetimes? Or is it some kind of cosmic lottery that most of us never get to win?

“Out of interest,” I say. “Did you and Max fill out your compatibility questionnaires?” Eden drags herself away from her man and leans one elbow on the bar. “Of course. Max wanted to make sure your algorithm was working.”

“So, what did you score?”

She gives me a smug smile. “Ninety-two.”

I almost choke on my own saliva. “Are you fucking kidding me?”

She looks confused. “No. Why?”

I stand up straighter. “Just haven’t seen a score that high before. New record.” Up until now, the highest was eighty-six, and that was one of my research couples who’d been together for thirty years. “Guess it must feel good to know you chose right.”

She smiles wistfully into her wine. “I don’t need a score to tell me Max is my soul mate. When you know, you know.”

I roll my neck again to try and relieve the tension in my shoulders. “So I hear.”

She touches my forearm, and I can feel the sympathy she’s exuding. “Toby, you’re a six-foot-five, totally ripped, scruffily handsome genius. I have zero doubt you’ll meet your perfect match someday soon.”

I shrug her off. “Doesn’t bother me.” I’m such a liar. I want a soul mate just as much as the next person. I just doubt it’s something I’m ever going to have.

Eden frowns for a second, before turning to me with an excited expression. “Well smack my ass and call me stupid, why didn’t I think of it before? She’s gorgeous, intelligent, quirky as hell––”

“Eden, I’m the professional matchmaker here. How about we leave potential dates to the expert instead of just hooking me up with some random woman you know.”

“She’s not random. She’s Asha’s best friend.”

I cringe. “Are you talking about that Joanna chick you mentioned ages ago? The one who first told you about Mister Romance? Sure. I hear you. But just know that one day, you’ll meet someone amazing and forget all about how busy you are. When your soul mate shows up, you can try to deny them, or ignore them, but it won’t work. They’ll bully their way into your life whether you want them to or not. I love Eden like a sister, and I’m grateful that she looks out for me, but I’m really not in the mood for this conversation tonight. She’s working on the assumption that there’s someone out there for everyone, and the more I study the numbers, the more certain I am that most of us are destined to stagger from one bad relationship to the next, until we die, miserable and alone.

“Well, thanks for the drink,” I say as I pat her shoulder. “But I really need to get back to work.” Without waiting for permission, I sit back down in front of my laptop and open it.

She rubs my back. “Okay, then, Doctor Love. Go matchmake your little heart out.
