The finale to the Crossfire series. I’ve been a fan of this series since Bared to You was first released, and I have followed Gideon and Eva’s intense and passionate romance across 5 books now, and though this one provided the happy ending that we all want for them, as a book it left me kind of underwhelmed.

I’m not going to rehash the storyline, because if you’re a fan of the series you’ll know where these characters are at. But I will say that if you’ve read any of the books of this series, then you’ll know exactly what to expect in this one because it’s just more of the same.

I love Gideon and Eva’s love story. The coming together of two incredibly damaged people has been beautifully told by Sylvia Day, and the chemistry and connection between these two characters has pretty much leapt off the page! The angst, steamy passion and heart-clenching emotion that Day put into the story kept mesmerised in the first few books, but having said that, I feel that their story could have been told in less books.

The few books of the series felt too stretched out, and this book is just more of the same – Gideon and Eva sorting through their issues, declaring undying love to each other, and standing up to people who want to hurt them. Usually the kind of story I love to read, but after five long books, it felt a bit ho hum for me I’m afraid, and I got to the point where every time they talked about how much they loved, wanted and needed each other, I started rolling my eyes.

There were also a couple of things that struck me as strange:

Firstly, Eva…

Spoiler

After being so determined to be an independent woman, the books starts with Eva quitting her job after mere months of being a take-charge, gung-ho career woman to take time for herself, focus on her wedding and move into Gideon’s penthouse, with the intention that she would eventually work towards helping Gideon in his company. Ummmm, really? If this was truly her standpoint, SO many of the earlier conflicts in the series are now completely pointless!

Secondly, there are some last-minute twists thrown into the book which admittedly add a bit of excitement to the story, but seem really pointless. Why did those particular secrets need to be revealed? And what was the point of it all unfolding the way it did when it had pretty much no impact on the overall story?

I was also surprised that not all of the side-stories were finished up. There are a number of smaller storylines running through the series, most of which impact on Gideon and Eva, and the majority of them were just left hanging. Anne, Hugh, Corinne, Deanna, Stanton, Victor (that was an unexpected twist), Gideon’s mother and, of course, Cary! You sort of get a feeling how things might end up, but it’s never made clear. I don’t expect everything to be wrapped up in a neat little bow, but I would have liked a bit more closure on some of these issues.

From a purely sentimental standpoint, I’m happy that Gideon and Eva worked through their issues, found an incredible love together and got their HEA. But from somebody who wanted to read a really good story, I really didn’t feel it.

3 stars.

The Crossfire series

<div
