I came to Colorado penniless, heartbroken, and pregnant, searching for a fresh start. Weston gave me a job at his family’s resort, then left the next day and never returned, not even to visit.

Then I stumble in on Weston cooking breakfast shirtless—gloriously, inappropriately shirtless—in the shared kitchen of my duplex in employee housing. Given the shock on both our faces, he wasn’t expecting a roommate either, let alone two.

The growly pilot is only home to start his family’s new heli-skiing operation. I can handle being his temporary roommate, right? Chemistry and attraction aren’t impossible to ignore when you agree on ground rules. Besides, even with those gorgeous, brooding brown eyes, the guy is a walking thundercloud…until my daughter, Sutton, makes him laugh and he smiles at me. Then everything changes. This is a gorgeously emotional romance between a man determined not to fall in love, and the single mother who has him questioning everything. It’s sweet, sexy and romantic, and I loved it!

Weston is the middle of the Madigan boys who were left traumatised by the death of their mother, and their father’s subsequent alcoholic neglect. They each left their dysfunctional home the minute they were able, except Weston stayed longer than he wanted to, sacrificing his dreams to care for his younger brother, and while he doesn’t regret his choice, he’s got a whole lot of hostility about it. But now he’s answered his big brother, Reed’s call for help and he’s back on the mountain to set up a heli-skiing operation. But he plans to keep to himself, wanting nothing to do with Reed, or their father, and with no plans to make connections of any kind.

Callie is the photographer at Madigan Mountain. She met Weston ten years earlier when she arrived pregnant and desperate, and he gave her a job. Now she’s a single mom who has made a good life for her and her daughter, Sutton, though she dreams of more, and she’s working hard to achieve it.

When Weston arrives at the mountain, he moves back into his old duplex, which just happens to be where Callie and her daughter are living. They both get a huge shock when Weston shows up, but the two of them agree to be roommates – with strict rules in place to keep things amicable and uncomplicated. Weston is serious and growly, but he soon gets into the swing of living with the two girls, and it’s a really sweet friendship that develops both with Callie and with Sutton. But there’s also a simmering attraction that intensifies the more they get to know each other, and it’s so awesome to watch.

The tension in the house was a live, bare wire just waiting to burn the place down.

Weston and Callie are completely up front with each other. They know what they’re feeling, they know the other is feeling it too, but Weston is adamant that he doesn’t want a relationship. That doesn’t them from acting on all of that mad lust though.

“Tell me we won’t ignore it. Tell me I can have you … Even if it’s just once.”

It’s hot and steamy, and their connection is clear from the very first touch, and the intensity of it all surprises them both. So, it’s completely unsurprising when they agree to keep going… knowing that it won’t go beyond friendship and sex.

“It’s not going to be just one night.
His fingers flexed on my upper thighs.
“No, it’s not.”…
“I want you … I want whatever this is between us.”

When feelings develop, things are bound to get awkward, but I loved watching Weston and Callie’s story unfold. They’re both completely honest with each other, they know where they stand, and they don’t hide anything, and Callie dives in knowing that she’s probably going to end up hurt, but wanting it anyway. There are some ups and downs, and the emotion is beautifully written, and seeing them so open with each other about it all had me feeling everything.

“Don’t love me. Please, don’t love me. I’m nowhere near good enough.” She deserved someone who could love her back just as fiercely.
I already hated whomever it was.
“Too late.” She shrugged. “I love everything about you, Weston Madigan.”

In addition to the romance, there are other things happening for the characters. Weston has some pretty significant family issues to address, and I enjoyed that part of the book. The family dynamic is a great base for the series, and I’m already feeling a lot for all of the Madigans. Then, both Weston and Callie gave up their dreams for their loved ones, and though neither of them regret it, they’re both searching for fulfilment in their careers, which is fun to read. And then there’s little Sutton, who is an absolute delight, a wonderful character who adds a lot to the book with her own story and emotions, and her relationships with Weston and her mother.

All of the different elements come together really well, and there’s a wonderfully happy ending that is sweet, satisfying and swoony, topped off by an epilogue which left me smiling.

I picked up her hand and put it on my chest. “You just have to know that this is yours. You don’t have to want it, or need it, or accept it. It belongs to you, no matter what.”

This is a really sweet read. 4.5 stars.

An Advanced Review Copy was generously provided by the author in exchange for
