The third book in the Treasure State Wildcats<\/i> series, this one shifts focus, as we move from the coaching staff of the Wildcats football team to its star quarterback. Rush and Faye\u2019s story took place in the background of the events of the first book of the series, [book:Coach|63288993]. We saw some pretty significant stuff go down with them, and now Devney Perry has taken us back to give us their story in full, and it\u2019s quite the ride.<\/p>\n

Rush and Faye meet when he comes to her rescue and they end up sharing a campsite together. Their next meet up is just as unexpected, and ends with them spending an earth-shattering night together. Faye immediately puts her walls up and backs right off, until she discovers that she\u2019s pregnant. It\u2019s news that neither of them wanted, but they accept it and declare themselves all in to prepare for their baby. But figuring out what\u2019s happening between them is the tricky part.<\/p>\n

Faye grew up in brutal circumstances and has learned the harsh lesson that she can\u2019t rely on anybody. She is independent and proudly self-sufficient, and she\u2019s determined to take care of herself. Whereas Rush is privileged with a loving and supportive family. He\u2019s a giver with a huge heart, and he wants so badly to be there for Faye – in all the ways – if only she would let him in.<\/p>\n

I was so fucking tired of pretending like this wasn\u2019t real. That I didn\u2019t crave her to the point of distraction. <\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The love story is an angsty slow burn that is heartbreakingly emotional. It\u2019s awkward, and neither of them handle it particularly well, but it\u2019s real<\/i>. It\u2019s reflective of who the characters are, their experiences and their feelings, and the difficulty of their situation, and I ached for the confusion and pain of it all.<\/p>\n

Did she not feel this pull? If she did, how could she be so strong to fight it? When she was in the room, every cell in my body screamed to get closer. The distance? It was killing me slowly.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

There\u2019s a lot of longing, pining and almost<\/i> moments, and it\u2019s not a smooth road, but I enjoyed watching Rush and Faye get to know and understand each other. Rush patiently puts so much work in to build Faye\u2019s trust, and she slowly starts to open up and find the courage to let her walls all the way down for him. When the romance does come it\u2019s sweet, sexy and heartfelt, and I loved watching it happen.<\/p>\n

\u201cRush.\u201d She tugged harder on my shirt. \u201cStop playing.\u201d
\n\u201cSeems only fitting I torture you for a minute. You\u2019ve been putting me through hell for months.\u201d<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Of course, there\u2019s a beautifully happy ending, and the story ends in a great place with an epilogue (and bonus epilogue) that provide great closure for these two.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s an angstier read than I usually prefer, but I enjoyed the character development, the awesomeness that is Rush (and his family), and the hard fought-for love story.<\/p>\n
