It’s a bit darker than Aurora Rose Reynolds’ other series, with her heroes existing on the shady or downright criminal side of the law, but their hearts are in the right place, and overall this book has a sweet yet sexy romantic feel to it, with a touch of darkness.

Kai appeared in the first book in this series, Assumption, where he stepped in to help Kenton. In this book, he’s stepping in to help Myla, whose life just literally exploded. And in this instance, the only way he can protect her is to marry her and whisk her away to his Hawaiian mansion (pick me!). Myla doesn’t remember Kai, but they met as children and he has always felt a protective instinct when it comes to her. And now that she is his wife, that feeling is even more intense.

Of course he’s wildly attracted to her, and when it becomes clear that his feelings are reciprocated, they decide to give a real relationship a try.

Sometimes, the things that seem the most difficult end up being the most extraordinary.

I really like these two together. Their chemistry is undeniable and I love the way that they don’t hide how they feel and genuinely make a go of things. It’s not all smooth sailing though, and the danger threatening Myla, and the constant danger that Kai lives with, causes some drama, but they follow their feelings (and their hormones) and they find something amazing together.

Even just holding Myla eased something within me, brought peace I thought was long gone.
She was my peace in a world I knew was fucked up beyond most people’s understanding.

OMG this is one hot read! There is a lot of sex, it’s all very descriptive, and it’s so freaking steamy! Kai is a dirty talker, and their connection in the bedroom (and out of it) is electric! But to tie in with that, the emotional part of their relationship was beautifully explored and I really liked how we got to see that connection and watch them fall for each other in a way that was realistic and not just about the sex.

“You have shown me that I can trust again … You saved me from me, and I would be lost without you.”

But they exist in a dangerous world, and through Kai proves that he is willing to do anything in the world to protect the ones he loves (Kai on a mission of vengeance is a scary, scary thing!), will it end up costing him the very future that he’s fighting for?

I really enjoyed this read. It’s got that ARR sweetness to it that a lot of her love stories tend to have, though with that darker edge that balances it out nicely. I thought that Kai and Myla’s love story was really nicely done, with a great mix of emotion, sweet moments and cold-shower-worthy sexy time. I thought the ‘bad guy’ part of the book was a little disjointed, and I would have liked a bit more detail around that, but it added a bit of excitement to the story, and I was happy with the way it played out.

There was never a time when it wasn’t real. Even when I was fighting it, I still knew I would fight for it.

The story is written in dual POV, which I loved, and there is an epilogue which ties everything up beautifully! And there’s even a glimpse of Sven and Maggie who have the next book in the series, and am really excited to dive into their story next.

Really enjoyable – 3.5 stars.

Underground Kings

<img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async"
