We were given a glimpse of Sven and Maggie together in the last book of the series, and the sizzling dynamic that I saw in that one little scene had me so excited for their book, and I wasn’t disappointed. Add in some bad guys and a bit of danger, and the stage is set for a great ride.

Our couple meet when Maggie barges into Sven’s nightclub and harasses his guests while searching for the person responsible for drugging her sister while she was at the bar. Sven is annoyed, but also intrigued and impressed by her tenacity when Maggie returns night after night, and he offers her a job as his assistant.

Maggie is a strong, immediately likeable heroine. She’s attracted to Sven, but she knows he’s a manwhore, so she keeps her feelings to herself while working in close proximity with him every day. Sven is an arrogant charmer. He’s used to women falling at his feet, but his sassy new assistant seems immune to him. But there is some epic sexual tension simmering behind their arguments and banter, and their interactions are gold! The dynamic between them is so much fun, and I loved watching them play off against one another.

“Are you going to behave?” He laughs.
“Probably not,” I tell him honestly just as my feet find purchase on the sidewalk.
“You’re lucky I like you just the way you are,” he whispers.

It’s clear that there are feelings between them and it’s one of those situations where they are practically in a relationship without actually admitting it. Things step up a level when Maggie’s troublesome sister’s dramas put her in immediate danger and Sven steps into hilariously ultra-protective mode, and it’s not long after that that things between them suddenly become very real.

“She guards herself so closely, never allowing herself to be vulnerable for anyone. But I won’t accept anything less than all of her. I want her— no, need her— to feel for me what I feel for her.”

I love that ARR’s books usually have the hook ups occurring early so that there’s lots of time spent with the couple together, but in this case I was enjoying the build up so much, I would have loved some more of it. Instead, the declaration of love comes out of nowhere, and though it made me squee with delight when it happened, I was sad to see the end of the bickering anticipation.

“Mags. I’ve given you time. I’ve done everything but write it in the sky, and you still do not understand I’m in love with you.

Their coming together isn’t conventional by any means, but I thought it was an interesting twist that played out well, and these two are just fantastic together. Sven’s alphaness and Maggie’s smartassery mean that there is lots of ongoing bickering – but now with lots of hot, hot sex and swoony declarations.

“I loved you before I even understood the pain that you caused in my chest.”

There are ups and downs for Sven and Maggie to go through, but their relationship is strong and their love for each other is beautifully explored.

“You weren’t in my bed, but there wasn’t a time I didn’t think of you as mine. I was just waiting for you to catch up.”

Tying in with the other books in this series, Kenton and Kai and their wives come to town so that the boys can work together to take out the bad guy that has been making all of their lives hell. That slight element of darkness is still there, but it takes a back seat to the relationship development, the girly time and the chance to catch up with the couples from the previous books – all of which I really enjoyed.

Another of the highlights of this book was Justin! Though his story was touched on, I’d love to read it in more detail and I’m really looking forward to Infatuation.

The ending of the book gives us a steamy glimpse of each of the couples, and I loved the epilogue which showed us the gorgeous happy ending which left me smiling like an idiot. Overall, this was a really enjoyable read and I loved it.

4 stars.

The Underground Kings series

<div data-post-id="14886"
