And I can’t believe I don’t have any more Demonica books to read! I don’t want to be done with it, because I’ve loved every minute that I’ve spent with the characters in these books, but I’m so happy that I got to experience this story. Bravo Larissa Ione!

Being book 5 in the series, this review is going to be a little bit spoilery as to events that have taken place in the previous books – although no more spoilery than the synopsis is. But consider yourself warned.

This instalment tells the story of Sinead (Sin) – newly discovered and one-of-a-kind female Seminus demon (she is a succubus, and sister to the the Sem boys in the series) – and sexy paramedic, Conall (Con). Sin and Con had a very hot moment in the previous book, and the chemistry between them from that moment on has been intense, so I knew this book would be sensational.

To be honest, I wasn’t a fan of Sin before I started this book. She was so angry, cold-hearted, and tried her best to be a badass. In this book though, Ione was able to take those qualities and make them endearing. Yes, Sin is all of those things, but of course it’s all a front she puts on to shield her hurt, guilt and vulnerability. Having spent most of her life as a slave and / or an assassin, she has had to become tough and hard, showing no emotion and needing nobody. And with the opportunity to get inside of her head and see her battle with her inner demons (no pun intended), I loved her from the very start of this one.

Her love interest, Con, is a dhampire – a vampire-werewolf hybrid, and he is all kinds of awesome! Aggressive, aloof, and with a wickedly dry sense of humour, he has a gorgeous soft side, and is swoonily protective. He finds himself drawn to Sin following their hot encounter, but he is also fighting demons from his past, as well an unwanted future that has been laid out for him, and all of this is revealed slowly throughout the story.

Sin and Con have insane chemistry. Despite the fact that they had already caved to the UST, the tension continues to build with the two of them antagonising each other constantly.

“Come here.” His voice was low and rough, and Sin swung around, her furious glare burning a hole right through him.
“Screw you.”
“Been there, done that,” he growled. “Now, come here.”
She shot him the bird and started towards the door. “I don’t respond well to orders.”
He was up in a flash … and he had her backed against the wall. “Then what do you respond to, little demon?”

The plot thickens with the spread of SF…

“Sin Fever,” Wraith chimed in with a little too much enjoyment.
Sin Fever? They’d named the fucking disease after her? Bastards

… a disease that Sin inadvertently started during a failed assassination attempt, and which is now ripping through the warg species, killing all that encounter it. As a member of the Warg Council, Con is charged with the task of hunting Sin down and bringing her in to answer for her actions. But of course, he has no intention of doing that, and instead he nabs her and takes her on the run in order to protect her.

I loved the development of the relationship between Sin and Con as the two of them banter, argue, and try (and fail) to fight their growing attraction to each other. As a succubus, Sin is constantly throwing out “hellacious fuck-me vibes”, and Con is practically powerless to resist her – giving us some REALLY hot scenes! But there is also a lot of emotion between them. Con fights so hard to break down Sin’s walls, and to help her deal with her past, and the scenes where he pushes her, and she starts to let him in, are beautiful! But being a dhampire comes with its own set of problems, and there are some massive obstacles in the way of their HEA. And even though I had some massive freak outs and sweary moments, I loved every single minute of it! These two are absolute dynamite together, and there is plenty of hotness, lots of feelings and some beautifully tender moments.

“I’ve got you,” he murmured into her hair. “I’ll always get you.”

This book had me hooked from the very beginning. My heart was racing through most of it, and there was never a part where the action slowed or I lost interest. There is plenty of action as Sin is chased mercilessly by several factions, as well as action going on in the Underworld as politics turn violent.

But the big highlight for me was seeing all of the siblings together. I have loved each of the boys from the previous books, and seeing them all hanging out together, working and fighting together, and in the protective big brother role as Sin goes through hell is absolutely sensational! Even though she may not have wanted them, they always had her back – being there to help and support her, and pulling out the big guns to protect their baby sister.

“One of your brothers I’m guessing?”
“Yep. The mean one. Oh wait, they’re all mean.” She grinned. “You are so fucked.”

Happily, we get to check in with each of the boys and their mates and families, which I loved. And a quick shout out to Luc – I was so happy to see him get his HEA as well!

I am so sad to be finished with this series. I have adored each and every one of the books, and have loved being immersed in the world and the characters that Ione has created. Demonica is definitely going down as one of my ALL TIME FAVOURITE series. The awesome is seriously off the charts!

5 SENSATIONAL stars.

The story now spins off into the Lords of Deliverance series, which has been set up nicely, with the introduction of two of the new characters, promise of the continued story of existing characters, talk of prophecies, and a possible impending apocalypse. It’s all happening, and I can’t wait to continue on.

And in last minute news – I’ve just discovered that the next book, Reaver will be released in December 2013. Labelled as both a Demonica and Lords of Deliverance book, it will tie the two series together.
