It’s a great mix of action, intrigue, magic and dry, laugh-out-loud sarcastic humour with just enough romance to keep me satisfied.

“We were rolling around on the helipad as he tried to muscle his way out of my armlock, after slamming me onto the helipad.
“I finally realized the source of your mutual attraction,” Saiman said, his voice dry.
I looked up. He was standing a few feet away.
“Do enlighten us.” Curran tried to roll into me to break the lock. Oh no you don’t.
“You both think violence is foreplay.”

Kate and Curran are on a desperate mission to help the young members of the pack. With shifter children struggling to control their animal natures, more and more of them are turning loup and not surviving beyond their teens. There is a cure to loupism, but it is made in Europe from a single source, and it is guarded fiercely.

When Curran is approached to travel to eastern European to mediate a dispute between packs, his payment is offered in the form of the elusive medicine. It’s an offer that he cannot refuse, so even though they know they are walking into a dangerous political shitstorm, Kate, Curran and a small group of shifters travel to Europe and into the middle of what they know is going to be an elaborate trap. But who is the bad guy? Who is his target? And what does he have to gain? It’s a disaster of a situation with twist after twist complicating things even further, and amidst the politics and danger in the volatile situation, Kate and Curran’s relationship is put to the test like never before.

Wow, this was a big book! Big, in terms of what the characters go through and the developments in the overall story arc. We get up close and personal with more members of the pack (and I loved seeing some of the main players open up a bit more), Kate’s family drama continues to be explored, and before it’s all over there will be violence and devastation, and not everybody will make it out alive (*sniff*).

Kate and Curran’s relationship battles form a big part of the story, and it’s heartbreaking to read about, but it form the basis for some great progression for them, and I loved seeing them both so vulnerable and open to each other as they fight their way forward.

“You’re mine, you know that, right? If you ever try to leave me it won’t go well.”
“I don’t deserve you,” Curran said… “But I got you, and I’m an entitled, selfish bastard. You’re all mine. Don’t leave me.”
“I won’t. Don’t leave me.
“I won’t.”

This book feels more serious and dramatic than other books in the series with all of the political wrangling and relationship drama, but there are still the brilliant character dynamics and sarcasm to keep things light, and all of the elements are there to give us a fantastically exciting read with kickass magic/action-packed urban fantasy that I love so much about this series.

I’m so excited to see where it goes from here.

4 stars.

Check out our Kate Daniels series page for more information including reading order, reviews and buy links.

Buy: Kindle Ebook | Paperback Review 4 stars!
