“Well, hello, beautiful … You are a sight for sore eyes.”

3.5 stars

After all this time, I still get stupidly exited over a BDB release, and when I learned that this book was finally going to give us Assail and Sola’s story – with a secondary storyline for Vishous and Jane, I couldn’t not wait to get my hands on it!

V is one of my fave of the brothers, and with us getting a glimpse of he and Jane having some problems in the last book, I was a bit scared going into this one, but so damn thrilled to be back with this couple. And what I really liked about their story in this book was that it was so real. They are having issues, and though their lives are far from normal, they are dealing with the sort of things that every couple has to deal with. It was real, but OMG, my boy almost broke my heart! I’m not sure I’m 100% ok with how it all played out, but their struggle was beautifully told, and I loved how the two of them turned things around, opened up to each other and found their groove again.

Assail and Sola’s story has been building in the later books of the series. They’ve both taken a bit of a back seat more recently, but it’s finally their time! Assail has hit rock bottom. He’s literally on death’s door until his cousins track down his lost love with the hope that she can drag him back from the brink. And OMG, the feels! The big moment is spine-tingling, and watching these two finally find their time was just gorgeous. But Sola knows nothing of Assail’s world, and they have a long way to go to find their HEA. I would have liked a bit more time with them rather than their story feeling like a sub-plot, and once they were together I didn’t really feel it like I wanted to, but there were some swoony moments, with a wonderful family tie-in with Sola’s grandmother and Assail’s cousins adding a lot to their story, and I enjoyed watching it happen for them.

These two stories would have been enough to carry the book for me, but we also get the story of Vitoria Benloise. Honestly, it bored me, I wasn’t interested, and we absolutely could have done without it. Though it does provide a nice opportunity for some badassery.

But there is a new threat emerging. A mysterious evil with its sights firmly set on the species, the Brotherhood, and in particular the King. It’s a new direction for the series and I’m keen to see where Ward takes it.

So yeah, I didn’t love it as much as I hoped, but I did like it, and the seeds are planted for the next book. J.R. Ward has announced that The Saviour will feature Muhrder, with a side-story for Lassiter, and I remain excited for what is coming next.

3.5 stars.
