Book #5 in the Kings of Sin series, this is a semi-dark romance full of longing and wild chemistry, with fantastic audio, and I really enjoyed this one!
Vuk Markovic is a rich, cold, ruthless badass. A mute ex-assassin with a tragic and violent past, he has risen to become a billionaire businessman with a dangerous side, and the ability to get whatever he wants. Until Ayana. Vuk was completely smitten with gorgeous model Ayana Kidane the moment he laid eyes on her; from that moment, she was the only woman he saw. But then, she got engaged to his best friend, Jordan.
She was his when she should be mine.
What Vuk (and everybody else) doesn’t know, is that Ayana and Jordan’s marriage is a contract marriage of convenience. They are not in love, they never have been, but they have their reasons for agreeing to marry. For Ayana, it’s a way out of a toxic business deal and will set herself and her family up for life, but the closer she gets to her wedding date, the more she finds herself drawn to her fiance’s enigmatic best man. And when bad guys from Vuk’s past put them all in danger, Vuk’s protectiveness forces them into close proximity and they grow closer than ever.
Jordan was her fiancé in name, but I was the one she’d turned to first. I was the one who understood what she needed—not comfort, but vengeance. I was the one who would kill and die for her in the same breath.
The sexual tension in this book is great. Vuk and Ayana have great chemistry, you can feel their attraction and how much they want each other, and I was so here for it. They’re both sensible and mature with how they handle it all, and even with the outlandish circumstances they find themselves in, it’s all very functional as they slowly open up to each other and fall even harder, fighting their feelings all the way. The forbidden element makes it all so much more exciting as they pine for each other, unable to act on their wild lust, and the slow burn is fantastic.
With Ayana, there was no walking away. No negotiation. She was mine, and I would die before I lost her.
I loved Vuk. He is brutal, fierce and wildly protective. He’s kind of terrifying and has no problem wreaking his vengeance whenever he deems it necessary, but with Ayana he’s a teddy bear. He’s sweet, caring and thoughtful and the man is completely obsessed with his girl. He knows it, he owns it, and he’s completely unapologetic about it. He allows her to bring out his softer side, while still letting her see his darkness, and the man is hot as hell, and the sexy time between these two is sizzling!
The focus is very much on the romance, but there are side stories going on – issues with Ayana’s career, time spent with her family, and Vuk’s history and him ‘taking care of business’ in the present. It’s intense and a little extreme at times, but it all ties in to create a story that had me hooked from start to finish.
Characters from the previous books appear, and I loved catching up with them and seeing the boys all together, but you could absolutely read this one as a standalone.
I listened to this as an audiobook, narrated by Jason Clarke and Nia Serge, and they do an amazing job. The way the audio is produced so we can tell when Vuk is using sign language, and when they are thinking as opposed to talking is really well done, and this is such a great book to listen to.
I really enjoyed this one. 3.5 stars.
