Dr. Russell has a bad reputation around our hospital. The scrub techs say he’s cold-blooded, the nurses say he’s too cocky for his own good, and the residents say he’s the best surgeon in the world—really, just a swell guy!—on the off chance he’s within earshot.

I try to avoid him and his temper at all costs. It’s just as easy to admire his sexy, grip-it-while-he’s-ravishing-you hair and chiseled jaw from a healthy distance, preferably from the other end of the hallway…half-hidden behind a plant.

Unfortunately, my plan crumbles when my trusty ol’ boss decides to swap his white coat for a Hawaiian shirt. His retirement leaves me with two terrible options: switch specialties and spend months retraining, or take an open position as Dr. Russell’s surgical assistant.

That means I have to stand near him in the OR for hours on end and anticipate his every need without letting his biting words and bad attitude intimidate me. Oh, and as if that’s not difficult enough, my silly crush on him—the one I’ve tried to stomp on until it disappears—might just be reciprocated.

It’s fine.
I’m fine.

I take my job seriously. There will be no smoldering bedroom eyes across the operating table, no angry almost-kisses in the storage closet. (Well, no more of those.)

What’s the phrase? An apple a day keeps the doctor away?
Maybe I should go for a whole damn bushel.

Review

5 “ARE WE IN LOVE OR WAR?” STARS!

I had a smile on my face from the first page to the last while reading Hotshot Doc. I don’t even know what to say except that I loved it. Drama doesn’t take up space in this story so we get all the sweet, sexy, swoony stuff I love in romantic comedies without a bunch of unnecessary angst and I appreciated it. It filled me with warm fuzzies and I just wanted to stay curled up all day with Bailey and Matt.

Bailey has custody of her younger sister and is doing everything to give her the best life she can. She’s had to push dating to the wayside and is focusing on her job as a surgical assistant. When the surgeon she works with retires he tries to get her a job with one of the other doctors at the hospital. None of them have an opening except for the one who she really doesn’t want to consider.

Matt is the hotshot doc known for his good looks, arrogance, and rude demeanor. He is hard on his staff and regularly makes them cry. His previous surgical assistants didn’t last long and he is in need of a new one as soon as possible. He doesn’t think Bailey can cut it as his assistant either but he doesn’t really have a choice since there are no other applicants. Bailey quickly proves she can handle whatever he throws her way and Matt can’t deny that she is best assistant he’s ever had. When circumstances make Matt look at Bailey in a new light, he realizes there is so much more to her than he thought and things get a bit more complicated than he could have imagined.

Hotshot Doc is a little bit enemies-to-lovers, a little bit forbidden, and a whole lot of wonderful. The storyline, the characters, the emotion, I loved it all and found myself totally invested in Bailey and Matt’s lives.

Bailey is so likable. She is real, relatable, and such a hard worker. Her determination really made me believe in her. She is adorable, funny, and super sweet but has a backbone and isn’t a pushover. She is a really good person and everyone likes her. Everyone except maybe Matt. At least that’s how it feels until she gets to really know him.

I want to go back to a few minutes ago when he was ignoring me, because the way he’s looking at me now, it’s like he’s also seeing my vulnerable spot. What a dangerous development. He already wields so much power, and I’ve just hand-delivered him even more.

At first I wasn’t so sure about Matt. However, because this book is written in dual POVs, getting into Matt’s head shows his true nature, giving us so much more of himself than world gets. Since we know what he is thinking I wasn’t given a chance to dislike him. He’s more complicated than I first believed and I loved his passion for the work he does for children.

Before tonight, he was two-dimensional to me. He existed as a surgeon and nothing else. Now, seeing him in this room, hearing him talk about his past, I’m suddenly confronted with the idea what there’s a heart beating beneath that suit, that maybe he has wants and desires that extend past the operating room.

This book is so much fun. The witty banter is entertaining and the sexual tension cranks up the heat. It’s a fantastic slow-burn romance with undeniable chemistry.  When they finally allow themselves to explore their feelings, they are so good together. They understand each other and care about the same things. They see the best in the other yet still accept the flaws. They give each other their all and bring on the feels, and I loved it!

As I said before, there isn’t much angst and I loved that there wasn’t crazy drama thrown in just to make things difficult. There is a situation that comes up that has the ability to ruin everything they’ve built but in the end I think it all came together as it should. The epilogue was perfect and believable, and I couldn’t keep the smile off my face. Bailey and Matt just make me happy!

I have to add that I adored Bailey’s little sister, Josie, and I hope that she gets her own book when she grows up. The relationship between Bailey and Josie was wonderful and the love and support they had for each other was everything.

They were fun and entertaining and I loved every scene between the two of them!

Overall, Hotshot Doc was a lighthearted rom com that makes you laugh, love, and swoon, and I couldn’t get enough!! I said it before and I’ll say it again, I loved this book!!
