4 stars!

Book three in The Rising series, and we are well into the thick of things now! In the land of Triton the Beast is getting closer to rising, there are political and religious shenanigans unfolding everywhere, and the four couples prophesised to save the day are all getting closer to their big moment (if you want more details than that, see my review of book #1).

The last book in the series left off on a nasty cliffhanger, and this book picks up shortly after all hell broke loose in those final moments. Our characters are reeling, and the decision is made to return to their homes to deal with rising tensions and prepare for the battles to come.

But what about the romance? Well, our four couples are all officially together and in various stages of falling in love. It’s not all easy and they each have their challenges, but they are learning to be together, opening up to each other and taking each other’s backs, and I love seeing them find their way. And of course, they are all about exploring their physical connections, and the sexy time is steamy as always!

A quick rundown:

Spoiler title
  • True and Farah are now married, and though dealing with a lot, they are stronger than ever and fiercely standing by each other’s sides.
  • Mars & Silence are faced with unexpected news which spirals into problems for them, but their passion for each other and their undeniable bond helps them through. And there’s something magical about these two making up after a fight. Hot!!!
  • Ha-Lah’s secret is revealed to her husband, who proves to be awesomely supportive of his bride – though all are not happy with the impact that she is having on him.
  • And Cassius & Elena… *dreamy sigh*. Emerging as my favourite couple, I particularly loved seeing them travel to Cassius’ home and begin their battle to bring about the change that Cass has longed for. With his strong and fierce betrothed by his side, he is finally facing the demons from his past, and I loved seeing things progress for them!

There are strong storylines for a number of side characters, even more characters introduced, and a whole lot of intrigue as the political pot keeps boiling, plots are uncovered and tensions mount. It’s all building to a big ending, and those last chapters give us a taste of what is to come, and I’m excited to see how it’s all going to play out in the big finale.

I listened to this as an audiobook, and once again was so very grateful for the multiple narrators who bring so much personality to the characters. It’s confusing having so much going on with so many different characters, and when we’re now getting POV’s of ‘the people’ of the different lands! But the different voices help to individualise the characters, keeping things clearer while listening. I still don’t remember all of the names of all of the side characters, but it’s not impinging on my ability to follow the story, so it’s all good.

Characters from the Fantasyland crew continue to be a part of the ongoing action, and if you’re unfamiliar with them then I can only imagine they are adding more confusion to things, but I am relishing seeing them again and love how they have been tied in.

I’m really enjoying this series, and with everything poised and ready for the big battle, I’m excited for the final instalment to see how it’s all going to end.

Another great read. 4 stars.
