5 stars!

Wow. I’ve been on a bit of a fantasy kick lately. Perhaps with the world being as it is, I’m enjoying the opportunity to escape into something completely different, and this book succeeding in completely sweeping me away! Intriguing, funny, action-packed, suspenseful, magical and romantic, it is an amazing read and an incredible debut, and I absolutely loved it!

In the city of Cesarine, Louise le Blanc is a witch in hiding. For two years she has survived by thieving and sneaking around, relying on her charm and wit but never allowing anybody to know who or what she really is. For magic is feared, witchery is outlawed, and all witches are burned at the stake

Reid Diggory is a Chasseur, a soldier sworn to the church and indoctrinated to its teachings. In Reid’s black and white world, witches are evil, and he has made a name for himself by upholding the church’s beliefs and bringing them to justice.

In a bizarre twist of fate, after a robbery gone wrong, Reid and Louise are forced into marriage. It’s a situation which is supposed to protect them, though neither of them are happy about it, and the resulting situation is highly entertaining. Reid is straight-laced and serious, a rule follower who questions nothing. Lou is everything that Reid isn’t – wild and irreverent, she’s a straight-talker who doesn’t hold back, and OMG, I just love her!

These two clash with every encounter, and it’s so much fun to watch. I laughed so many times as they bicker and banter. But beneath that harsh exterior, Reid has a soft side. He is clearly protective of his new bride, but he has a caring heart, and as he and Lou get to know each other, things begin to change.

It’s a slow burning romance, but I felt it all, and I loved every moment of it! With the differences between Reid and Lou, it couldn’t be fast. It’s gradual and it feels natural, and I was right on board as everything began to change.

“Do not urge me to leave you or turn back from you.’” He trailed his fingers down my arm in slow, torturous strokes. My head fell back on his shoulder, my eyes fluttering closed, as his lips continued to move against my neck. “‘Where you go, I will go. Where you stay, I will stay.”

But Lou has secrets – more than just what she is. The truth unfolds throughout the book as the story builds to the big reveal and it, and the fallout, had me absolutely captivated. And while she is busy trying to hold so many things together, Reid’s entire world falls apart. It’s shocking and exciting, action packed, devastating and surprising. I couldn’t put the book down, and while the ending provides some closure for this book, it leaves us hanging with big things coming for the rest of the series, and I am so freaking excited to continue on.

“I loved her. Despite everything. Despite the lies, the betrayal, the hurt … If she was destined to burn in Hell, I would burn with her.”

The audiobook is narrated by Saskia Maarleveld and Holter Graham, and they do a wonderful job with it, bringing Lou, Reed and their world to life and making us feel everything.

I absolutely loved it and can’t wait for more! 5 stars!
