From New York Times bestseller Katy Regnery comes a new twist on the beloved American legend, “Rip Van Winkle.”

Sometimes, the journey is the love story.

On the night of his high school graduation, Ripley Van Winkle—local quarterback, prom king and all-around big man on campus—swan dives off the top of the Sleepy Hollow Lighthouse. . . and lands on jagged pile of rocks. Suffering massive brain trauma, Rip isn’t expected to live, but he somehow manages to beat the odds: most of his physical injuries heal, though he remains in a deep coma for the next twenty years.

When Rip awakens two decades later, he will need to relearn his body’s most basic functions, in addition to catching up on twenty years’ worth of history, progress and change.

Something called the “internet” has the answer to every question you could ever dream of asking, and people are reliant on mobile telephones smaller than a Walkman. His high school girlfriend is married with children, and he has an eighteen-year-old sister who was born while he was “sleeping.”

As Rip struggles to find his place in this strange, new world, one presence in his life will become both a beacon and guide: his childhood friend, Katrina Van Tassel. But Trina has a challenging adult life of her own, and there’s no guarantee she has space in her life (or her heart) for her one-time high school crush . . . Rip Van Winkle.

4 stars!

Rip Van Winkle and Katrina Van Tassel grew up together. Their families were inseparable and Rip and Trina were friends. Then when tragedy struck Trina’s family, everything changed for Trina.

In high school, Rip and Trina couldn’t be more different. Rip is a popular jock who everyone wants to be and Trina is the overweight nobody who gets picked on all the time. They do not hang out anymore but when an irresponsible decision forces them to spend time together, the friendship they once shared starts to grow and there is even a spark of something more. Then, tragedy strikes again, this time for Rip, and his life is forever changed.

Twenty years into the future and Trina’s a successful doctor and Rip is stuck back in time. He used to be the hot popular guy and now he’s a middle aged man who has missed half his life.  Everything is different. From the world to the people he knew to everything about himself, it is hard to accept what happened and the heartache is real.

I felt their connection when they were teens and I feel it now that they are adults. Nothing is the same between them except for Trina’s unrequited love. Now, they must come to terms with what Rip waking up means to both of them. He is alive and able to get on with his life. It’s a miracle but it is far easy for Rip.  My heart went out to him as he navigates all the newness in his life.

I loved following Rip and Trina as they rediscover their friendship and the hope of more. Trina has stood by Rip over the years and basically accepted that the love she felt would never amount to anything. But now that he’s awake, there’s a chance they could pick up where they were headed and she honesty doesn’t know what to do.

I really enjoyed the way the story played out. From teens to adults, the characters were solid and I thought the ages were well written. When they were teens, I believed they were teens. Now that they are adults, Trina acts her age and I liked that Rip is written in a way that keeps him back in the past. It allows for realistic growth for Rip as he learns to live in his new life.

It’s an emotional story both while they were young as well as now that they are grown. They have to let the past go if they want to be together but even acknowledging their feelings, it’s a difficult journey. I love that they open their hearts to each other and everything comes together wonderfully.

I have to give a shout out to the secondary characters because they are awesome! I loved Rip’s parents and his sister, Jude, and I loved Trina’s daughter, Mary Mae, and the relationship that forms between her and Rip. Even Trina’s best friend was a great addition to the story.

About the Author

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Katy Regnery started her writing career by enrolling in a short story class in January 2012. One year later, she signed her first contract and Katy’s first novel was published in September 2013.

Twenty-five books later, Katy claims authorship of the multi-titled, New York Times and USA Today Blueberry Lane Series, which follows the English, Winslow, Rousseau, Story, and Ambler families of Philadelphia; the six-book, bestselling ~a modern fairytale~ series; and several other standalone novels and novellas.

Katy’s first modern fairytale romance, The Vixen and the Vet, was nominated for a RITA® in 2015 and won the 2015 Kindle Book Award for romance. Katy’s boxed set, The English Brothers Boxed Set, Books #1–4, hit the USA Today bestseller list in 2015, and her Christmas story, Marrying Mr. English, appeared on the list a week later. In May 2016, Katy’s Blueberry Lane collection, The Winslow Brothers Boxed Set, Books #1-4, became a New York Times E-book bestseller.

In 2016, Katy signed a print-only agreement with Spencerhill Press. As a result, her Blueberry Lane paperback books will now be distributed to brick and mortar bookstores all over the United States.

Katy lives in the relative wilds of northern Fairfield County, Connecticut, where her writing room looks out at the woods, and her husband, two young children, two dogs, and one Blue Tonkinese kitten create just enough cheerful chaos to remind her that the very best love stories begin at home.
