Review

Book 6 of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, and it’s finally time for Phury to have his story told. Phury’s book doesn’t always get a lot of love from the fans, and yeah, it’s slower moving and not as intense as other installments, but it’s still a great read, and SO much happens!!!

Unlike other books in the series, the romance really takes a back seat while Phury fights his demons. Over the last few books he has slipped deeper and deeper into destruction, and here, we get to see him hit rock bottom.

“For him, life was a coin that had disaster on one side and waiting for disaster on the other”

Phury’s descent into hell sees him dealing with not only his addiction issues, but also his history with Zsadist, unresolved issues from his past, his job as a Brother, and his relationship with his ‘shellan’, Cormia. And even though it is a slower pace than what we are used to, watching how his imploding life impacted on those who loved him is compelling reading, as well as seeing him find his strength and finally start to reclaim his life.

We also get to watch Cormia, of the Chosen, adjust to life on ‘this side’. Her story is told pretty much independently to Phury’s as their ‘mating’ was not one of love, but one of duty. And due to his demons, Phury is not living up to his side of the bargain. Cormia definitely has feelings for him, but has been trained all her life to do as she is told, and so just silently and unhappily waits for him. And one of the things I love about this book is seeing her start to explore her new world, discovering who she is, and starting to take charge of her life.

It’s also time for the younger boys to shine – John Mathew, Qhuinn and Blay all go through some MAJOR upheavals and developments that cause huge shifts for the rest of the series. We continue to get John Mathew’s POV, but we also get to see more of Qhuinn as well. I adore both of these boys, so that was a big bonus for me.

Rhevenge has an interesting storyline, and we get to know him better, gearing up for his book next, and we finally get inside the head of his head of security, Xhex, and see things start to develop for her.

There are massive changes in both the vampire world and the Lessening Society, and a couple of surprises appearing at the Brotherhood’s Mansion.

And never fear romance lovers! Phury and Cormia do eventually find their way to each other, and it’s gorgeous! They complement each other beautifully, and even though their love story doesn’t form a huge part of the action, there is still a bit of hotness, and some swoon to be had.
