There are two reasons I loved this book:

Number 1 – Banter
I’m a HUGE fan of witty, sarcastic banter, and this book had it in spades!

At first it bothered me because high school kids don’t talk the way the characters in the book do, but it was so great, I was able to overlook the fact that they spoke like worldly 20-30 year olds and just go with the flow. And once I did, I was completely hooked.

Number 2 – Jude Ryder
He even has a swoony name!! *sigh*. A friend of mine likened him to a younger version of Travis Maddox, and I can definitely see that. He is the quintessentially clichéd bad boy (with a violent, criminal and man-whorish past), just waiting for somebody to come along and believe in him and let him shine.

There is no sex in this book, but OMG the boy can seriously kiss (phew, some of those kisses were steamy!). But I think the major part of his appeal is the superb bantering and the gorgeously swoony lines (too many to put in here, so you’ll have to check out the quotes I added below).

The love story was beautiful. Both Jude and Lucy had some serious issues, but I love how they came together. There were sparks from the very beginning, and I loved that Jude had Lucy’s back, and that she was so determined to be with him despite people telling her that he was no good (I love a strong, independent heroine!). Yes, there was some stupidity, and my heart broke for both of them at times, but they are high school kids so it’s sort of expected. Plus they had some seriously swoony moments to make up for it.

Having said that though, I thought there were also a few moment that were overly-dramatic. It felt like the author was attempting to bring a hugely epic moment into the story, but it seemed to me that it didn’t really fit.

Spoiler
The incident in the beginning of the book was really intense, and at first I thought Lucy was dreaming. But really? Killing her dog, setting her hair on fire, trying to drown her in a lake and then dowsing her with gasoline and about to light her up – all so that Jude could come to her rescue! It seemed a tad excessive, and then it’s hardly mentioned again for the rest of the story! And then Jude’s moment at the Graduation ceremony, *sigh*. It reminded me of Patrick Swayze’s speech at the end of Dirty Dancing, and again, it was a bit over the top for my liking.

There were some great twists and turns in the story, some of which had me sitting there with my mouth wide open in disbelief. And some of the characters you aren’t sure whether you should love or hate, but I liked the way that I was kept guessing.

This was a great read which was really well written. I had a ridiculous grin on my face the whole time I read it 🙂
