ABSOLUTE F*CKING PERFECTION!

I have been absolutely blown away by this book. It exceeded my expectations in every way. There was more of everything that I loved from the first book, and then just… more again!

Horrifying, devastating and shocking, the story is brilliantly put together – told from multiple POVs with the setting jumping from the events as they happen, to the aftermath, and back again. Yet through all of the darkness, and twists and turns and betrayals, there is a strong feeling of hopefulness infused into the story – hope for freedom, redemption, forgiveness and love.

Livvie and Caleb were both amazing characters – both of them go through so much, and yet they both remain so incredibly strong. I loved Livvie’s voice as she recounted her story, but it was Caleb’s POV that really drove the book. Through flashbacks to his past and watching him deal with the events as they take place, you see so much more than what is just happening on the surface of the book. It drags you right down into the ‘how’ and why’ at the heart of the story, and that is a very dirty and angsty place to be.

And it is through understanding Caleb that you fully appreciate the story. Livvie nailed it when she was talking to the very intriguing FBI Agent Reed…

“I’m not stupid, Reed. I know the shit he did to me was awful, I fucking lived it. But I’m telling you, monsters aren’t born, they’re made, and someone made Caleb. Someone beat him, someone did horrible things to him, and the only person who helped him, Rafiq, made him into a killer. He didn’t have someone like you, or Sloan, or the goddamn FBI to help him. He had to survive all by himself and even though I can’t forgive him, I understand him.”

I was gripped from the first page as the story unravelled with a great sense of anticipation that didn’t let up until the very end. It moved at a great pace, with no lag in the action or suspense, and even though I wanted to scream “JUST TELL ME WHAT HAPPENED!!!” I lapped up and devoured every single word.

I’m not giving away any of the storyline because if you’ve read the first book – Captive in the Dark – then you’ll know what to expect. If you haven’t read it, then GET ON IT!!!

Make no mistake, this is a dark, dark book and the writing is brutally confronting. Everything is right out there for the reader to experience – be it good, bad and/or disturbing (and a lot of it, mostly sexual, is very disturbing). So many scenes in this book hit me like a smack in the face. They stole my breath and left me swearing out loud, and occasionally even had me weeping over my kindle (but were they sad, angry or happy tears? You’ll have to read it to find out!). And it’s not all doom and gloom, there are enough happy, and strangely tender, moments to keep from triggering you into a deep depression. It’s an absolute, freaking rollercoaster!!! But you’ll be craving every moment!

And as for the ending… I have no words.

Absolutely incredible. 6 shining stars.
