5 stars!

White Hot Kiss is the first full length novel in The Dark Elements series by Jennifer L. Armentrout. There are Wardens – a type of gargoyle, and Demons walking among the humans, and the Wardens hunt the demons to keep them from running amuck.

Layla is part Warden, part demon. She is different than everyone else, yet she is still trying to fit into this world. She is lonely and feels as if no one understands her. Raised by Wardens, she has pushed her demon side away and tries hard to live as a Warden would. But unlike Wardens, Layla has the ability to see souls and she can tag demons. Wardens protect the earth from demons and her ability makes her valuable. She also has a gift – a terrifying gift. With a single kiss she can suck the soul from creatures, and fighting her demon side isn’t always easy.

I met the man’s stare, held it and felt my lips curve into a smile. My heart raced, my skin tingled and flushed. I wanted his soul—so bad my skin wanted to peel itself off my bones. It felt like waiting for a kiss, when your lips were moments away from joining, those breathless seconds of anticipation. But I’d never been kissed before.

Zayne is the Warden who has taken Layla under his wing. He has helped her understand the history of their world and has been there for her as she tries to figure out her place in it. He is almost like a brother to her, however, she does not have brotherly feelings toward him at all. She loves him but nothing will ever become of them. She can not kiss anyone with a soul for fear of stealing it and because she is not full Warden she will never be chosen to mate.

Layla has accepted who she is and things seem to be going well. Other than the tagging and desire for souls, she lives a fairly normal life. She is able to go to school and even has some human friends. However, after her seventeenth birthday things start to change. Demons seem to be showing up all over the place and all have one target in mind – Layla.

Roth is a gorgeous, upper level demon who seems to pop in whenever Layla is in danger. Layla has never met an upper level demon yet Roth seems to be different and he is the only demon who has not tried to kill her. He says he has been watching after her for a while and that he is there to help her. He makes her question everything she has been taught.

I do not want to go into the story much more than that. I did find it extremely entertaining. I loved all things Roth, including Bambi. And I loved the interactions between Layla and him. As we see their relationship grow, Roth allows her to experience things she never thought she would be able to.

My senses went into overload, firing in every direction. The kiss—it was everything I could’ve imagined a kiss to be and then some. Sublime. Explosive. My heart fluttered wildly, from a yearning so deep, darts of fear shot through my veins.

And the banter between Layla and Roth made me giggle.

“Watching you kick ass was incredibly hot—like really, really hot. But if you ever do anything like that again, I will throw you over my shoulders and spank your—”
“You finish that sentence and I’m going to introduce my knee to a certain part of your anatomy.”
His gaze dropped and he winced. “Okay. You win. I’ve seen your kicks.”

As the story progresses, things go terribly wrong and we are left with a cliffhanger that has me reaching for the next book. I know there is a love triangle in this series so I am bracing myself. I am not a fan of them but I am confident that Jennifer L. Armentrout will handle it well.

Even though this is a YA series, it still had some hot moments along with the sweet moments and I can’t wait for the next book.

In that tiny moment of time, just a flicker of a second, his golden eyes met mine. “Free will, huh? Damn. It is a bitch.” And then he smiled—he smiled—at me, a real smile, revealing those deep dimples. “I lost myself the moment I found you.”
