In an unforgettable love story, a woman’s impossible journey through the ages could change everything . . .

Anne Gallagher grew up enchanted by her grandfather’s stories of Ireland. Heartbroken at his death, she travels to his childhood home to spread his ashes. There, overcome with memories of the man she adored and consumed by a history she never knew, she is pulled into another time.

The Ireland of 1921, teetering on the edge of war, is a dangerous place in which to awaken. But there Anne finds herself, hurt, disoriented, and under the care of Dr. Thomas Smith, guardian to a young boy who is oddly familiar. Mistaken for the boy’s long-missing mother, Anne adopts her identity, convinced the woman’s disappearance is connected to her own.

As tensions rise, Thomas joins the struggle for Ireland’s independence and Anne is drawn into the conflict beside him. Caught between history and her heart, she must decide whether she’s willing to let go of the life she knew for a love she never thought she’d find. But in the end, is the choice actually hers to make?

5+  stars!

Don’t go near the water, love.
Stay away from strand or sea.
You cannot walk on water, love;
The lough will take you far from me.

Amy Harmon’s What the Wind Knows deserves all the stars! This historical romance delivers not only an epic love story that will stand the test of time, but a stunning, original masterpiece that brings history to life and weaves extraordinary magic throughout it.

After the death of her parents, Anne was lovingly raised by Irish grandfather in New York. When he dies, Anne travels to Ireland for the first time to sprinkle his ashes in the middle of Lough Gill, the lake near his childhood home. What starts as merely a trip to fulfill his dying wish becomes so much more than Anne could have imagined. Pulled into the past, her life is forever changed in the most magical way.

I was drawn to this story and immediately captivated. It is perfectly paced, well developed, and beautifully written. The past and the future merge with great originality as Anne delves into the history of Ireland and of her family, seeing both in a new light. It was a complex puzzle with each piece unlocking an amazing truth. The journals bring the realities of the time to life as the story unfolds and we see how things were in Ireland during the 1920’s when Anne’s grandfather was just a boy. The historical aspect of the story held my interest and I enjoyed learning about Ireland’s fight for independence.

And then there is the love story! It is everything! I am completely enamored with Anne and Thomas. They are passionate and they love and live life to its fullest, never giving up what they fight for. They are genuinely good and selfless characters whose love is pure, true, and endless. I was bewitched by the romance that grew when they least expected and was desperate for their happily ever after no matter how impossible it seemed.

I knew Thomas Smith. I knew him, and I loved him. Desperately. But loving him—knowing him—was as implausible as loving a face on a screen. We were impossible. In a moment, in a breath, it could all be over. He was a dream I could easily wake up from, and I knew all too well that once awake, I wouldn’t be able to call the dream back.

The story took me on a journey through the good and the bad, through love and death. It broke my heart but with the sad tears came tears of joy, love, and wonder. The surprises, hidden treasures, and magnificent little truths made me contemplate the way time works and gave meaning to why things happened the way they did. In the end I was consumed by the everlasting love between Anne and Thomas that triumphs when faced with the unimaginable.

“I don’t know how any of this is going to work. I get scared when I try to make sense of it, when I think about it for too long, or when I try to unravel it all in my head.”
He was quiet for a moment, considering, his eyes never leaving mine. “What did your grandfather tell you about faith?” he asked.
The answer came like a whisper, fluttering past my heart, and I was back in my grandfather’s arms on a stormy night in a world so far away and long ago, it hardly seemed real.
“He told me everything would be okay because the wind already knows,” I whispered.
“Then that’s your answer, love.”

Overall, What the Wind Knows effortlessly blends reality with fantasy and makes me believe anything is possible. Mesmerizing, magical, and magnificent, it’s a new favorite of mine that has found a special place in my heart. I loved it!
