EAT. SLEEP. FOOTBALL.

Those are Jackson Jennings, Jr’s three mantras . His entire life, he’s been a trained athlete with only one end-game: the Pro’s. No girls. No parties. No alcohol.

EAT. SLEEP. FOOTBALL.

Repeat.

Every Friday night, Triple J cruises the strip on campus, bored, lonely and conditioned not to party. But the night he meets Charlotte Edmonds on the side of the road, he wonders if his three mantras will ever be enough.

BIG. DUMB. JOCK.

Charlie has no time for Jackson’s antics. Not when he’s stealing her food or teases her to no end, making her tingle in all the right places. But if she’s ever going to have a boyfriend, she’d choose one who isn’t a Neanderthal. One with manners and actual time to spend with her. Not a hulking man-child who cruises the strip at night, in his Big. Dumb. Truck.

Review

4 stars!

Sara Ney writes fabulous NA romcom, with uniquely intriguing characters, laughs, feels, and sexy, emotional romance, and Charlie and Triple J’s story fits the mold beautifully!

This is book #3 in the Jock Hard series, but it is an absolute standalone. The story takes place in the same College as the previous books in the series, but there is no character crossover at all, so you can easily read them individually, in whichever order you like.

Jackson Jennings Junior, or ‘Triple J’ lives, eats and breaths football. It’s all he’s been raised to do, and though he’s devoted to his studies, he ignores all of the fun aspects of college life – parties, alcohol and girls – in order to concentrate on his goal of a career in the NFL. A sweet and gentle Texas boy, he misses his life back at home and, embracing his loneliness, he cruises Jock Row in his massive truck, trying to find some contentment and a little piece of home in his new life.

Charlotte ‘Charlie’ Edmonds attends the same Iowa college as Jackson, but her first impression of the giant footballer is not a good one. Neither is the second….. or the third. In fact, these two grate on each other at every opportunity, creating a series of funny and highly entertaining interactions that become more and more influenced by their slow realisation that they are attracted to each other.

Boobs. Legs. Ass.
She’s a trifecta of feminine perfection…
And she hates my guts.

It’s a wonderful set up as Jackson and Charlie’s snark and irritation becomes an unexpected friendship, and with Jackson firmly in the ‘no time for girls or relationships’ camp, that’s exactly where he plans to stay. But the more time they spend together, the more they begin to overcome their vast differences and find a common ground. Charlie discovers that Jackson is a good guy – not just a good guy, but the sweetest. He’s kind, caring and real, and he has a huge heart that is impossible to resist. And Jackson begins to realise that his single-minded focus means he’s missing out on having a life… a life that could include Charlie.

“What are you doing to me? … I thought I had everything figured out … I’ve never met anyone who made me want to change.”

Oh, Charlie, if I were the dating kind… I’d date the hell out of you.

Jackson absolutely melted my heart. He’s so charmingly awkward and naïve, and he’s so freaking funny! His POV had me laughing so many times as his inner confidence battled with his outer insecurities. But he is such a sweetheart, you cannot help but fall for him.

I set the pumpkin on the ground between my feet and put my arm around Charlie. Pull her in closer, tucking her under my armpit like I’d do a football – or a pumpkin. “Better?”
“Yes, thank you.” She hunkers down a little more. “You’re blocking the wind, which is nice.”
I’m blocking the wind because I’m a fortress of strength and steel and goddamn power, and don’t you forget it.

And Charlie is a wonderful match for him. Sweet and accepting of Jackson and his quirks, she has a strong snarky streak and an admirable inner strength, but she’s inexperienced in all things love as well, and watching these two openly and honestly find their way forward together is so freaking cute. They have fun together, they flirt, laugh and tease, and they take things at their own pace. That’s not to say that it’s all sweetness and innocence, because while they may not go diving right into bed together, when the sexy time comes, it’s hot as all hell! But there is emotion there is well, which is beautifully written, and I loved seeing them fall slowly and realistically and so damn hard for each other.

I kiss his majestic nose again. Again. Loving every second of it, cherishing this moment, hoping to remember it forever, no matter what ends up happening with us. We may not have a happily ever after—only time will tell—but we’re happy now, and I want to touch his soul—and his body.

It’s a really cute romance, and I got swept up in the fun, the sweetness, the heat and the feels, and I just love Jackson and Charlie together. But their new-found feelings for each other also have to face up to the pressures and expectations that Jackson is facing. There’s some harsh realisations and a bit of character growth as they figure it all out, but I loved going on the journey with them.

On the downside, I did think that the book did end a bit abruptly. It felt like there was a whole storyline that wasn’t closed off.

Spoiler
I wanted to see Jackson stand up to his father, because OMG, what a dick! I wanted to see him take hold of his life and his career and deservedly tell his Dad where to go. We started to see a bit of that in this book, but it needed to be stronger, and I really would have liked to have seem some closure there for Jackson.
But the book ends in a good place, and overall I really enjoyed this one.

Definitely looking forward to more from this series!
