I really enjoyed this book! A shift from the usual BDB books, but still set in the same awesome world, this is an exciting and unexpected story with a sweet and sexy romance. The first in the Black Dagger Brotherhood: Prison Camp series, this book is still very much a part of the BDB universe with Rhage forming a significant part of the action.

Nyx is a stubbornly strong young vampire who is searching for her sister, who was imprisoned in the Glymera’s secret underground prison half a century ago. Since the Glymera was wiped out, the location of the prison has been lost, but when Nyx gets her first clue to where it may be, she takes the bold step to search for the underground maze and save her sister.

The Jackal was imprisoned over a century ago for a crime he didn’t commit. He has been languishing underground ever since, enduring hellish conditions but remaining strong. When The Jackal encounters Nyx breaking into the prison, he is immediately drawn to her and offers to help her (for a price), and he works with her to find her sister, protecting her in the scary world that he knows so well. And as they run from the bad guys and search for answers, they can’t resist the attraction that burns between them, and in the midst of the hellish conditions, we get a passionate, intense and gorgeous romance that is really fast moving, but I was right on board.

I really liked these characters. Nyx is great – I loved her determination and her no-nonsense nature, and the Jackal is a great mix of gentlemale and prison badass. He also has a fantastic group of friends in the prison, some really intriguing characters that we’ll see more of in future books (including a wolven! Nice!).

The BDB tie-in comes from a storyline set in the past where Darius engages The Jackal to design and build a compound for his BDB brothers. Rhage forms a part of that story in the aftermath of an encounter with his Beast, and he meets The Jackal right before he is imprisoned – neither of them with any idea that they are actually half-brothers.

It’s mostly predictable, but I thought it was lots of fun, with a wicked twist when we are introduced to the evil in charge of the prison, and all of those complications. And of course, the BDB get involved (bonus points for including V and Wrath!). It could have been a lot more epic than it was, and I’m still kinds confused by what happened during some of the action, but there was enough other stuff going on that ended really well to leave me satisfied.

It’s a great set up for the series, and this is a really strong start. I’m excited to read more.

4 stars.
