Review

4 badass demonic stars

Suzanne Wright is a go-to author for me. She writes wonderful PNR which is intriguing, action-packed, laugh-out-loud funny, romantic and so, so hot! Her characters are larger than life and wildly entertaining, and I dove into this book with high expectations and wasn’t let down.

This is the first book in the Dark in You series, which very loosely spins off from the Deep In Your Veins series. Demon badass, Knox, was introduced in Consumed and this (standalone) series takes us deeper into his world where demons live among humans in their own society with rules and politics, and a whole lot of action and excitement. Add in lots of sarcastic banter, a sexy alpha demon and his smart-mouthed heroine, an intense, highly passionate romance and a bit of a mystery, and I devoured this book from start to finish.

“You’re mine. I don’t walk away from what’s mine.”

Harper Wallis is a demon who lives in a small, deeply caring but slighty crazy lair – mostly composed of her family. Her life hasn’t been easy, but she has rolled with the punches, and is a strong, sassy and sarcastic heroine, and I loved her immediately. Knox Thorne is the Prime (leader) of his own lair and is also the most powerful demon on earth. He is both feared and revered and lives a mostly solitary life with only his trusted sentinels allowed close to him. When Harper and Knox meet, neither of their lives will ever be the same.

From their first touch, they discover they are each other’s ‘anchors’. Fated psychic mates that, once bonded, increase each other’s powers and become a calming influence on each other, taking away the threat of their inner demons turning rogue.

It was as simple for him as it was for his demon. This female belonged to him, was meant for him, and it was his role to protect her.

Neither of them refutes the knowledge of what they are to each other, but while Knox wants nothing more than to complete their bond, Harper is reluctant to tie herself to anybody. But Knox is not a man (demon) to be deterred.

“Since my mind brushed against yours, every instinct I have has told me that you’re mine and I should protect you and bond with you.” Of course he also wanted to fuck her until neither of them could walk. But that had nothing to do with her being his anchor. “You are mine”.

And more than just their psychic connection, they share a strong sexual attraction which is completely independent of their anchor bond, and again, it’s something that Knox is not willing to ignore.

“You’re very sure of yourself. And you mistakenly seem to think you can be very sure of me.” She pouted. “How sad for you.”
He gave her a pointed look. “I will have you in my bed, Harper. I always take what I want. Right now, that’s you.”

It’s a fantastic battle between these two as Knox works to seduce Harper and she fights to keep him at arm’s length. They are both incredibly strong and stubborn, and every encounter between them is full of feisty banter and sizzling with sexual tension.

“You’re a very strong personality, Harper. You would only be attracted to someone who’s either stronger or equally strong.”
It pissed her off that he’d read her so easily. “And you think you’re stronger, don’t you?”
“What I think is that when I’m deep inside you, neither of us will care.”

Holy hotness, Knox and Harper are sensational together! The sex is plentiful and absolutely steaming (especially with Knox’s handy little psychic enhancements!!) and they both find themselves completely swept up in all that they make each other feel. But though they revel in their physical connection, the emotional one is slower to come, and it’s a deliciously slow burn.

Knox’s inner demon is usually quick to bore of his bed partners, so they never end up hanging around for long. But there’s something different about Harper, and neither he nor his demon can get enough of her.

“You can do better. But…it’s too late for you. I told you before, you belong to me. I won’t let you go.”

But he is full of secrets. He never shares what breed of demon he is, and Harper only knows that he is crazy powerful, and dangerous because of it. But that doesn’t frighten her as she trusts him implicitly and she knows he’d never harm her. Harper’s issues stem from her past, which has left her with some abandonment issues so she’s reluctant to full give herself over to Knox. There’s a lot that they need to work through, and I love the way it all unfolds.

“You matter. So much that you’re a vulnerability, a weakness. But I’m keeping you.” Knox framed her face with his hands. “Nothing is more important to me than you.”

And as they explore their new connections, there’s a whole heap of political goings on with a power struggle in the demon nation. And with powerful Knox unwillingly in the limelight, all eyes are on him and Harper, putting her in danger from an unknown assailant, and it’s up to Knox and his sentinels to find who is after her, and why.

I really enjoyed this twisty, ‘whodunnit’ kind of storyline. It’s really well written, and is blended nicely into the political, action and romantic storylines. I loved watching Harper stand up for herself, and I also loved seeing Knox be all uber-badass and protective over his girl, and the display of supernatural powers by both the good guys and the bad guys was exciting, and I really enjoyed the action.

Knox’s sentinels (his nearest and most trusted friends) are a big part of the unfolding action, and I loved their part in the story. I also loved getting to know Harper’s family. The side characters add a lot of entertainment and I’m looking forward to getting to know them better as the series progresses.

The book ends at a good place, and I was completely satisfied with how everything finished up, but I know that Knox and Harper’s story is not over yet, and I’m really looking forward to more of them in the next book of the series.

Suzanne Wright is on another winner with this one! I loved it, and can’t wait for more.

4 stars.
