Review

“Once upon a time, in a land long since burned to ash, there lived a young princess who loved her kingdom …”

5 epic stars!

Wow, what a finish! Sarah J. Maas has given us an amazing ending to the Throne of Glass series. Full of action, intrigue, twists and turns, humour, drama, romance, and SO many feels, I devoured this book – and at close to 1,000 pages it’s not a short one! But it’s a thrilling ride as the characters I have come to love so dearly prepare for the final battle for world that they have fought so hard to protect, and for the futures that they so desperately long for.

There’s pretty much nothing I can say that won’t be a spoiler, so I’ll keep my review vague, but this book picks up shortly after the hideous cliffhanger of Empire of Storms and it’s all a bit heartbreaking at the beginning as our crew all deal with the fallout of that epic turn of events. Scattered to their missions, limits are pushed and relationships are put to the test as they prepare for their final stand.

Also of note – the events of Tower of Dawn lead into this book so make sure you have read this one as Chaol rejoins the main story… with some new friends.

The book is written in multiple POVs, allowing us to journey with each of the characters that we have come to love. We see their suffering, their vulnerabilities, their triumphs and their strength, all of the different plotlines woven together to create an intricate story with so much depth! We learn so much more about all of the characters who have grown so much since we first met them, and the dynamics between them all are fantastic.

“I am here, I am with you.”

And the romance! Obviously it’s not the main part of the story, but it’s there, and it’s glorious, with more than one love story woven in to all the action, and with all of the war and intensity, those moments are absolutely golden!

“The male I fell in love with was you. It was you, who knew pain as I did, and who walked me through it, back to the light. “

I listened to this one as an audiobook because the narration by Elizabeth Evans is just sensational and, like I have enjoyed the rest of the series, I wanted to experience the way that she brings the story to life. It’s 30+ hours of listening that I got through in an embarrassingly quick timeframe because I could not stop listening! It’s one of those books where you’re desperate to get to the end so that you know how it all finishes, but at the same time, you don’t want to finish it, you want to stay in the world and devour every single moment, and there were scenes that I listened to over and over again. Though I did think this one could have been a little bit shorter and not have sacrificed any of its intensity

It’s a wild rollercoaster of emotion. My heart broke, and it soared and I cried (sobbed) both sad and happy tears. It’s not always an easy read. I’m emotionally spent, but it was absolutely worth it, and though I can’t believe it’s come to an end, this series is firmly cemented into my favourites and I look forward to many, many rereads in the future.

“To whatever end”

5 stars.
