Review: Came Back Haunted (Experiment in Terror, #10) by Karina Halle

Buy:  Amazon Kobo Paperback

Blurb

A lot can change in three years.

For Perry and Dex Foray, it’s been a step in the right direction, a step toward living a normal life. They’re happily married, they have their own media company, they’ve done what they can to leave their sordid and scary past behind them.

But something has changed recently.

Perry’s biological clock is ticking.

Her sister, Ada, is going down the same path she once did.

And the Thin Veil between the living and the dead has weakened, letting an old friend walk back into their lives.

Only he may not be who he seems, and he might not be alone.

Sometimes the past won’t let you go.

And it turns out those three years of peace and happiness for the Forays were just the calm before the storm.

5 stars!

OMG, yes! I cannot overstate how much I loved being back in this world. EIT is an all-time fave series of mine, and being back with Dex and Perry on a brand new adventure was absolutely amazing! Spooky, funny, dramatic, epically romantic and ridiculously steamy, this book is everything that I love about this series. I read it in a day, unable to put it down, and I freaking loved it!

This book is not a standalone. Not only should you have read the entire EIT series, but you also need to read Ada’s book, Veiled, and the EIT novella, Ghosted, which is essentially the prequel for this book (and it’s written in Dex’s POV for the win!). This book picks up immediately where Ghosted left off.

It’s been three years since the events of Ashes to Ashes. Dex and Perry are still together – married, mad for each other, and living out their HEA. When we last saw them in Ghosted, they had been hired to communicate with a ghost, and entering the spooky-as-all-hell house where the ghost resides revealed more than they were expecting. Well, now they’re heading back to finish the job, except the ghost in question has motives of her own, and she’s not alone in that old haunted house. The house is a portal, and the veil between the dead and the living has weakened. Dex and Perry will be faced with terrors old and new, and the chance to save an old friend. But what will they have to risk in order to do it?

“I…I can’t lose you. I won’t. You’re more than my other half, you’re in my blood and in my fucking bones. To lose you is to love my very soul. To lose you is death.”

Like all EIT books, this one is terrifyingly spooky. I made the stupid mistake of reading this book late at night when I was home alone, and I admit, I had to get up and turn lights on. Seriously, creepy stuff. But at the same time, it’s awesome, recapturing the magic of those earlier books, and the absolutely fantastic character dynamics that make these books so amazing.

“We already had sex in a haunted school. Doesn’t that count?”

“If I remember correctly, you came three fucking times, and that was after you said I was crazy for wanting to have sex with you there. See, nothing bad happened.”
I pause and give him a wry look over my shoulder. “We almost
died.”
He adjusts his dick in his pants and walks over to me, full of swagger. “Kiddo, when don’t we almost die?”

And it’s not all horror and fear. There’s a huge focus on Dex and Perry’s relationship as they continue to embrace their wild, soul-crushing love and lust for each other, and they begin to figure out what they want the rest of their lives to look like. The sex is off-the-charts steamy and intense (Perry is a lucky, lucky girl), and the swoon is absolutely beautiful as we see these two so madly and openly in love.

“I know you believe in soulmates.”
“Don’t you?”
“I didn’t until I met you.”

It’s going to take every bit of strength they have to face the coming threat, and it’s not going to be easy. Not only are some pretty significant shifts in their life together, but the ghosty situation is about to impact every aspect of their lives. They will be tested in ways they never have been before, and there were scenes in this book that ripped my heart out. I teared up, and was feeling it all with them. But the pain is worth it to watch these two amazing characters find their way forward through the chaos, and I loved their journey and how it all ended up.

“I think we’re both two very weird and fucked up people who are crazy in love with each other. We have a lot of power, a lot of wild energy, and when we’re together, well…I guess that’s where the magic happens.”

We get to catch up with Dex and Perry’s friends, and I loved seeing them again, and things are happening with Perry’s sister, Ada. I was so intrigued by her storyline, and I’m freaking excited that she’s getting another book. She’s quite the little badass, and the developments for her in this book have me desperate for more of her story. And there’s another reunion which ups the awesome factor, and I’m so excited to see where that particular storyline goes!

I’m so happy that Karina decided to revisit this world. I am an EIT fan for life, and will read anything with Dex and Perry in it. There’s another book coming in March, and I am here for it!

Loved this one so much – 5 stars!
