Genevieve Daylee didn’t expect to be standing in front of a judge on her twenty-seventh birthday. But ever since her life became entangled with a former motorcycle gang, she’s learned not to expect anything but trouble.

Her mother, a woman she once admired and adored, is gone, leaving behind a trail of secrets and lies. She’s living in a tiny apartment above a garage owned by her brother, a man who loathes her very existence. And the father she met beside her mother’s grave is as much of a stranger as Isaiah Reynolds, the broken man with soulless eyes standing beside her in front of the judge.

Isaiah is her protector from the murderer at large in Clifton Forge. Though he’s more like a riven knight in dented armor than a prince on a white stallion. She knows next to nothing about him, other than he works as a mechanic. As of tonight, he’ll be sharing her bathroom.

And, according to the judge, Isaiah is now her husband.

Review

“If my heart left her breathless, then hers gave me a reason to breathe.”

4.5 stars

Devney Perry delivers yet again with a dramatic, suspenseful and beautifully emotional story featuring a broken hero, a marriage of convenience, and a slow-burning romance that will melt your heart. Isaiah and Genevieve’s story is heartbreaking and sweet, and so, so gorgeous. I loved it!

The second book in the Tin Gypsy series, this book takes us back to the small town of Clifton Forge, and picks up after the events of Gypsy King. I wouldn’t recommend reading this one as a standalone, and I don’t want to spoil anything from the first book so I’ll be keeping my review vague.

Isaiah and Genevieve met under intense circumstances during the climactic events of Gypsy King. Something happened between them in a cabin in the woods, and this book begins with Genevieve having moved into Isaiah’s apartment in Clifton Forge and the two of them getting married (for reasons which are revealed throughout the book).

It’s all kinds of awkward given that they barely know each other, and though they both accept their situation, they are strangers who don’t really know how to relate to each other. There is attraction there, but Genevieve’s life has literally just been turned upside down, and Isaiah has been through hell in his past and doesn’t feel worthy of anything good in his life. And they entered into the marriage knowing it would only be a temporary arrangement, so they’re just doing what they need to do in the meantime. It’s a heartbreaking setup, but it provides the building blocks for an amazing story as two broken people find themselves in a unique and life-changing situation, forced to lean on each other for the support they both crave.

Isaiah looked in the mirror and saw everlasting broken pieces, but maybe my broken pieces would fit with his. Together, maybe we’d make a whole.

In a delicious twist that had me all kinds of excited, Isaiah is the brother of Kaine, from Tragic (book #3 of the Lark Cove series). Tragic is probably my favourite Perry book, so seeing that tie-in and getting to revisit parts of that story was an unexpected bonus. If you’re familiar with that book then you’ll know some of the issues that Isaiah is dealing with, and I could absolutely understand his heartache and his need to protect Genevieve and try to keep his distance.

It was unbearable to be around her, knowing she’d eventually leave. It was exhausting to keep her at arm’s length when all I wanted to do was hold her close.

And though Genevieve is dealing with her own hell, her strength and bravery astounded me. Again, I could feel what she was going through and my heart broke for her, but I loved how she followed her heart, being there for Isaiah, allowing him to be there for her, and pushing him when he needed it. She’s the strong driving force that propels their relationship forward, and I loved watching it slowly and tentatively develop.

“Isaiah, you’re the sexiest, most handsome man I’ve seen in my life. And your heart? When you let me in, you literally steal my breath away.”

Their love story unfolds amidst a sea of drama. Continuing the storyline from the first book, there is a murder-mystery to be solved, secrets, lies and betrayal, danger on their doorstep just waiting to pounce, and a whole lot of family drama. It’s all woven together beautifully to create a read that kept me captivated, with surprises, twists and turns, a few tears, and, of course, that slow-burning romance that just build beautifully throughout the book.

If my heart left her breathless, then hers gave me a reason to breathe.

Oh swoon!

Perry brought all the feels with this book, and I loved the journey. There is closure for the main suspense storyline, but threads are there for Presley’s book up next, and I am so freaking excited to see what is coming for her. I loved the tie-in to the Lark Cove series, with some fantastic character crossover, and make sure you get the bonus epilogue at the end… it’s beautiful and provides a truly satisfying finish to the story.

I loved this one!

4.5 stars.
