The night Luke Rosen met Scarlett Marks was the only time he’s regretted becoming chief of police. One horrific night of blood and death, and now she’s living under his roof—all because he swore an oath to serve and protect.

Scarlett is stubborn and infuriating. She has no respect for the order in his structured life, and she never does anything she’s told. Worse, she doesn’t seem to care that the information she has on a motorcycle gang means she might end up dead. But her unwavering strength, her courage and tenacity and beauty, makes it impossible for him to abandon her.

If Luke is going to keep her safe, he’ll have to make the hardest decision of his life. He can either honor his values as a cop, knowing Scarlett is unlikely to survive . . . or he can break all the rules and protect the woman who’s invaded his home and his heart.

5 stars!

Wow, what a romance! Sweet, functional, sexy, with epic chemistry and so much emotion! Luke and Scarlett stole my heart, and I just loved their story.

This is the fourth book in the Tin Gypsy series. Luke and Scarlett have appeared in previous books of the series, and there is a continuing suspense storying that continues throughout the series, but you could read this one as a standalone. Each of the books tells the story of a different couple, and there’s enough background given so that you’ll know what’s going on. But this series is shaping up to be one of my faves from Perry, so don’t miss out on the earlier, awesome reads!

Luke Rosen is the Chief of Police in the small town of Clifton Forge. He’s appeared in a couple of the previous books, and I honestly wasn’t sure how he would cut it as a romantic hero, but damn, Devney Perry nailed it with this hero. He’s a good guy. A stand-up, sweet, kind guy, who is such a sweetheart. He’s brave, and protective, and yes, he’s noble, and OMG, he is ridiculously hot!

We met Scarlett Marks in the last book. She is the twin sister of Presley (heroine of Stone Princess), and she’s in a world of trouble. After unintentionally falling in with a group of bikies she witnessed something she shouldn’t have, and now they are hunting her down. In order to protect her, Luke brings her into his home to keep her hidden from the bad guys, and from the FBI who are also sniffing around.

Luke and Scarlett don’t get off to the best of beginnings. She is scared and frustrated, and she acts out in ways that infuriate him, but he recognises her vulnerability and he wants nothing but to help her. And slowly and unexpectedly, they settle into a quiet life together, a life where they don’t irritate each other, and where they are comfortable just being. That peace brings feels, and those feels bring a whole heap of chemistry that builds slowly as Luke and Scarlett begin to fall for each other, and oh, holy God, it’s so freaking hot!

“Scarlett, tell me to stop.”
“No.”
“I’m doing my best to stay in control here.” I jerked my hand to my side, closed my eyes and gritted my teeth. “Scarlett—”
She leaned in close. The whisper of her breath skated across my chest. “Lose control, Luke.”

OMG, I love these two, and I love their relationship so much! It grows from nothing to something truly special, and we get to watch every single step of the way, and I loved it! I loved seeing their feelings begin to change, I loved the anticipation of waiting for something to happen, and once it did happen, I was completely swept up in the emotion of it all, and I was right there with them through it all.

“Hold on to me, beautiful.”
I gripped his triceps. “Like this?”
“No.” He shook his head and brushed a lock of hair off my forehead. Then he touched the corner of his eye. “Hold on to me.”
Luke didn’t need to worry. He had me transfixed.

But these two don’t have an easy road. Scarlett is still in danger, and to get her out of it, Luke will be put to the test in ways he’s never been before. He will be forced to question everything he believes in and holds dear, but just how far is he willing to go in order to save the woman he loves?

I wasn’t just a cop, but a man falling in love who wasn’t ready to give Scarlett up.

The characters from previous books all appear as Luke gears up for the fight of his life, and I loved seeing all of them again. I love the dynamic between the group, and I love watching it shift and change as their numbers grow. There is a sensational set-up for Leo’s story, which is coming up next in [book:Fallen Jester|46184158], and there are epilogues (yes, more than one!) which finish off the story beautifully

This book was all win for me. Sweet, sexy and blissfully romantic with no angst and an exciting and dramatic suspense storyline which is well written and had my heart pounding. This is pure Devney Perry gold, and I loved it.

Excerpt

“If you’re not going to get out of the way, I’ll just go around.” I spun on my shoes, whirling the opposite direction, but when I went to take a step and carry my basket away, I suddenly found its weight missing from my arm. He’d stolen it from me before I’d had the chance to clutch it tight.

Then the world was spinning. The floors, the ceiling, everything flipped topsy-turvy.

I’d fainted.

No, that wasn’t right.

I was being carried. Hauled. That had been Luke’s threat and damn it, I’d underestimated him. The chief had made good on his word.

His shoulder dug into my belly as he walked. I lifted my face, pushing the hair out of my eyes. My basket of food sat exactly where I’d been standing. My chicken and rolls and cookies and chocolate milk. The items grew smaller with every one of Luke’s strides.

“Put me down.”

He kept walking.

“Put me down!” I shouted.

Still, he kept walking.

I lifted a hand and raised it above my head. My hair kept falling in front of my face, obscuring my vision, but that didn’t stop me from using every ounce of strength I had left. I brought my fist down on Luke’s lower back. Except my aim was shit so I didn’t hit his back. No, my fist bounced off his firm, perfect ass.

Luke didn’t so much as break his stride. “I promised Presley I’d keep you safe.”

And without another word, without stopping, he carried me in a fireman’s hold out of the grocery store and into the snow.
I was going back to the daisies, whether I wanted to or not.

Hello, Scarlett. I’m rock bottom.
