Blurb

Kaine Reynolds wants nothing more than solitude. After an unthinkable tragedy destroys his family, he’s cut off all ties to his former life so he can battle his grief the only way he knows how.

Alone.

So when Piper Campbell knocks on his door, rambling on about being his new neighbor, he slams the door in her face.

But Kaine’s gruff demeanor doesn’t scare her. She’s set on living in Montana and starting over after a terrible divorce. And she wouldn’t mind having a fling to chase away the pain of her husband’s betrayal. Her handsome, albeit rude, neighbor is the perfect candidate.

Yet what neither of them suspect is that their no-strings affair will result in the surprise of Piper’s lifetime—and Kaine’s worst fear.

5 magical stars

OMG I love this book so much!!! It’s a beautiful story of a woman determined to get a fresh start and a broken man who has isolated himself from the world getting a second chance at love. It’s an emotional and heartachingly beautiful story with a romance that I could not get enough of. I read this book in a day, unable to put it down, and it made me laugh, cry and swoon so hard. A truly magic read and my favourite from the series so far!

Piper is the assistant to Logan Kendrick (hero of Book #1), and she is moving to Lark’s Cove, enthusiastic and excited for a fresh start. She is leaving NYC following a heartbreaking divorce, and even though her ex-husband keeps begging for a second chance, she is determined to move on and create a life for herself in the quiet of the Montana countryside. And it’s while exploring the hiking trails that run behind her brand new fixer-upper that she comes across a rugged, broken-looking mountain man.

I love a broken hero, and Perry has given us a wonderful character with Kaine. Just looking at the cover of the book brings tears to my eyes and makes my heart ache, it’s so freaking perfect! The man has been through hell, and rather than deal with it, he has chosen to run and hide, and for three years he’s lived in isolation on his mountain with minimal interaction from the outside world, wallowing in his grief and anger. He doesn’t want companionship, he doesn’t even want anybody near him, but then along comes Piper, and everything changes.

It turns out that Piper and Kaine are neighbours. Their first encounter is not a pleasant one when he gruffly dismisses her, but that’s after they share a heated stare (you know, one of those ones that says so much while they say nothing at all). Piper is undeterred by Kaine’s gruffness, and figures that he may just be the perfect man to engage in some string-free sexy time. He clearly doesn’t want to get involved, neither does she, but the woman has needs. And those needs are more than met when the intense chemistry between them explodes. The attraction between Piper and Kaine is a palpable thing, the intensity of which takes them both by surprise, but it sparks something, and neither of their lives will be the same again.

I don’t want to say too much about this story, because you need to dive in and experience it. It’s a rollercoaster ride of emotions as they figure themselves out, and figure out who they are together. They both have issues from the past that they are dealing with, Kaine in particular, and his journey is a gutwrenching read, but watching him slowly work through it with Piper by his side is one of the highlights of this book.

Piper Campbell had broken past all of my walls and made me fall in love with her. She’d worked her way into my broken heart, filling the black hole with light.

And at the centre of it all is an absolutely stunning love story that I couldn’t get enough of! From the sizzling chemistry that had my heart pounding, to the quiet companionship, the sweet, flirty friendship, the steamy sex and the slowly building romance, OMG I felt it all! It’s beautifully tied in to the character growth that we see in Piper and Kaine, and every moment of it was so special. I reveled in it, feeling everything along with them and soaking up every glorious moment.

“Somewhere along the line, you stole my heart. I’m going to steal yours in return. Just wait and see.”

Whether I was smiling, swooning or crying, the feels are beautifully intense. There is some angst and drama and my heart ached so many times at all that the characters go through, but it’s perfectly balanced to make your heart pound without becoming too much, and overall there is a feeling of overcoming the past, moving forward, healing and sweet hopefulness. There is so much to love about this book – the characters (their pain and their incredible strength), their journeys, the direction that their story took, and the way it all played out. It isn’t the easiest relationship, but it’s worth every moment of it for the blissful ending, and that epilogue which finishes everything off beautifully!

The characters from the previous books in the series appear in this one, and given that this book is set some time after those ones, I loved seeing the progression in their lives. But you can easily read this one as a standalone.

I love, love, loved it, and can’t wait for more from this series! (Though this book will be hard to top).

5 stars.
