Give Me Love by Corinne Michaels is live!

The second book in the Rose Canyon series, Corrinne Michaels had my heart pounding and my stomach in knots reading this dramatic and emotional (yet still funny) small-town, second-chance romantic suspense.

Blurb

New York Times bestselling author Corinne Michaels brings another second chance standalone in the town of Rose Canyon.

My biggest mistake was falling in love with my fake husband.
It was supposed to be a marriage of convenience between two best friends in the military. Our plan was to collect extra money and stay stationed together.
But what failed? Me. I did. Because suddenly I wanted a man who was never meant to be my real husband.

In an attempt to remedy my mistake, I severed all ties and put my life as a combat medic and Emmett Maxwell behind me. I’ve lost too many people to open myself up to love.

Now I’m working as a private investigator, and fate has stepped in, forcing our paths to intersect again when I’m looking into the disappearance of a missing girl with ties to Emmett’s hometown. A case I fear puts his life in danger.

He gives me one week to prove my suspicions and then I need to sign the divorce papers and leave. The problem with that? The moment I see Emmett again, I realize how foolish it was to leave him, to think I could ever stop loving him. All I want is a second chance.

When the case threatens not only my life but also his, I’m faced with my worst fear. How many times can a heart break before it shatters beyond repair?

“Then let me love you.”

The second book in the Rose Canyon series, Corrinne Michaels had my heart pounding and my stomach in knots reading this dramatic and emotional (yet still funny) small-town, second-chance romantic suspense.

Emmett Maxwell is an ex-Army Ranger, and now Sheriff in Rose Canyon, and this book starts with a bang when we learn that Emmett is married to a bold and sassy private investigator who has just stormed back into his life. Emmett married Blakely, an Army medic, while they were on tour together. It was a marriage of convenience, but they were the best of friends until it all fell apart. Now it’s years later, and Blakely is working on a case which brings her to Emmett’s home town, and their worlds are about to collide once again.

I love a second-chance-romance, and this one is all wit and humour, and heaps of chemistry. They may be full of snark, but it is clear that there is so much emotion between these two. Though they ended badly, they loved each other deeply, Blakely just didn’t want to face it, terrified to love and lose the most important man in her life. So Emmett has spent two years being justifiably angry and trying to move on, despite still being very much in inconvenient, soul-deep love with his wife.

I hate her. No, that’s a lie. I hate myself for not hating her. I want to look at her and not want her.

“You are who you are, and so am I. I want more. I want a family and a wife. I want to love someone who will love me back.”

But being back in each other’s lives, Blakely wants to take the chance to figure out her feelings for her estranged husband once and for all.

“I just want some time. I want us to…try to be friends?” And maybe more. Maybe we can be everything we could’ve been.”

It’s emotional yet fun watching these two battle it out. They clearly feel so much for each other, but there’s so much anger, hurt and fear between them. They bicker and banter, and there’s an enjoyable back and forth as Emmett puts it all on the line.

“You were mad?”
“Yes.”
“And hurt?” I ask.
“Yes.”
“Because you love me?”
Blakely’s mouth falls open. “I…what?”
“I’ve been thinking about it, and it’s clear. You love me. You’re afraid of that, because you think something bad is going to happen.”
Her chest rises and falls, and then she looks down. “I’m always afraid that something bad is going to happen.”
“I’ve yet to hear a denial on how you feel.”

I love how strong Emmett is through all of this! He has lived through two years without the woman he loves, and he wants her back, but he’s not prepared to put up with game playing or stupid behaviour. He is honest and lays it all out, and I loved it!

“Let me know when you decide what you really want, Blake. I’m willing to give you love, but you have to be willing to take it.”

It’s a gorgeous journey as they find their way back to each other – raw, open and real, and in a way that is completely them.

“I love you, Emmett. I have spent years denying it, trying to will it to be different, but here I am – completely and utterly in love with your stupid ass.”
Fuck this woman owns me.

But we can’t forget about the whole reason Blakely came to town in the first place. Her investigation of a missing runaway ties in to events from the first book of the series, and it seems that the mystery goes deeper than any of them expected. Bringing in Emmett’s friends, and the boys (and girl) from Cole Security (featuring Liam, Charlie and Quinn cameos – yes!), their whole world is about to be upended, and my heart along with it.

OMG, it’s tense and exciting, and Corinne Michaels twists and turns this story all over the place. It’s unexpected and had me feeling so many things, anxiously flipping pages and desperate to see how it was all going to play out. I’m not sure I understand the character’s motivations as to why it all played out the way it did, but there’s no denying that is creates a whole lot of intensity, and I really like the way they dealt with it all.

“I want you in my arms, Blakely. I want to feel you, kiss you, hold you so I know that you’re safe. I feel fucking empty without you.”

The story ends in a good place, but there is more of the suspense storyline to be uncovered, and I’m sure that will happen during Holden’s book up next. And given that little glimpse into his story, I cannot wait for that one!

This is a great read. It’s exciting and intense, fun and witty, with great chemistry and a gorgeously emotional love story. I loved it.

4.5 stars.
