3.5 stars

The first book in a new series from Jeaniene Frost, this is a fast-paced and exciting paranormal romance with all kinds of supernatural creatures, a heroine with a vicious inner beast, and the light-hearted banter and entertainment I’ve come to expect from Frost’s books. It’s a fun read, and I really enjoyed this one.

Raine survived the brutal killing of her family, only to find herself supernaturally inhabited by the very beast that killed them. Her work as an ER nurse allows her to ‘feed’ the creature on the pain she encounters every day, and she does her best to keep it controlled so that it doesn’t take over her body and go on a mad killing spree. When she comes to the attention of the gorgeous, wealthy Remington Byrne, she learns that she is only part of a wider supernatural world that she had no idea even existed.

Remy is a warden, responsible for keeping the supernatural creatures in the city in line. Recognising an opportunity, he offers to help Raine permanently keep her beast in check if she agrees to use her powers to help him track down violent enemies that are threatening his family and who want to take his place. A fake relationship is the perfect ruse, and we follow Remy and Raine as they work together to track down the bad guys, all while Raine is introduced to a whole new world.

“I am the monster who protects you now.”

There is some steam, though the romance is definitely on the back burner in this book. While there’s obviously an attraction between Remy and Raine, I wasn’t really feeling their chemistry, and the emotional connection isn’t quite there. However, it’s hinted at, and I’m looking forward to seeing how their relationship develops in the next book.

It’s a fun setup in a new and unique world, with lots of different characters and creatures to get to know. The story moves quickly and there’s lots of action and supernatural politics, and the story is clearly not over yet. This is a solid start to the series, and a great read.

3.5 stars.

I listened to this as an audiobook, narrated by Tavia Gilbert. Those familiar with Frost’s other books will recognise her from narrating the Night Huntress series and its spin-offs. I have listened to those books so many times that this audio sounds like listening to a book featuring Cat and Ian, but she does a great job, and I enjoyed listening to this one.
