Will obsession be enough?

I’d always believed my love was enough to save him. To protect him.

I was wrong.

The Copycat killer gets closer every day, and I can’t help but feel his every move is in my direction.

With dead ends around every curve and bodies piling up, it seems our time is running out.

They took him from me. Stole the last bit of light and left him empty.

Now, it’s not only the Hollow Boys who are seeking revenge.

I’m out for blood. A war path for vengeance.

They wanted a villain?

I’ll give them one.

Review

“I never believed I had a soul, and now I think I understand why … because it belonged to her.”

4 stars

Dark, gritty and twisted, but bringing the feels, this is the heatpounding conclusion to Thatcher and Lyra’s story.

This is the fourth book in the Hollow Boys series, and the second book for Thatcher and Lyra. It’s definitely not a standalone, continuing directly on from that brutal cliffhanger in the last book, and diving right back into the story with not a lot of recap. But I was instantly transported into the darkly gothic, murderous world of the Hollow Boys, and I was hooked from start to finish.

Thatcher and Lyra have both endured so much in their lives, changing them, giving them a dark edge, forcing them to exist outside of the ‘normal’, craving blood and death, and for Lyra – craving the boy who was there at the darkest point of her life, and who has become the object of her obsession since childhood.

Thatcher is a cold, callous and unfeeling anti-hero, a product of his twisted upbringing, he is a psychopath who feels nothing… until Lyra came bursting into his life. She has always been there, the ghost in the background of his life, and in the last book we saw them come together, and we saw Thatcher start to experience emotion for the first time in his life, as his ordered world was flipped upside down.

I know who I am.
What I am capable of.
Yet my mind is always left spiralling when I leave Lyra. She does this to me and always leaves me with the same question.
Who am I when I’m with her?

Now, a copycat serial killer is on the loose, and Thatcher is being framed for it. So he and Lyra are holed up together while they and their friends continue their secret hunt for the bad guy, and figuring out how it ties into a people smuggling ring they accidentally uncovered while investigating the death of one of their own. It’s a twisted story, but the suspense of the last book has taken a back seat to the love story, and Thatcher’s character growth, and it’s a gorgeously emotional journey for him!

I’m falling apart, the hinges of my identity are broken, and I have no fucking idea of who I am anymore. I don’t know how to be someone that cares about someone else. I don’t know how to be anything but what my father made me.
“I was touch starved, and now you’ve fed me.” I tightened my grip on her hair, our noses rubbing against one another. “Of course I’m fucking hungry for you.”

Not only is Thatcher feeling for the first time, but he’s falling in love, and he has no idea what to do with it. His exploration of his feelings, the meaningful moments that he has with Lyra, and his heartbreakingly confused realisations stole my heart, as the psychopathic control freak finds himself completely overwhelmed by the woman who refuses to walk away from him.

I’d always been content knowing Lyra was mine, this secret voyeur who belonged to me in the shadows of the night.
I never expected that I’d want to be hers though. That I wanted to belong to her just as much as she belonged to me.

Full of emotional declarations and intimacy like neither of them have ever known, Thatcher and Lyra are exploring all of the aspects of their new relationship, and it’s a passionate and heartfelt journey for them. It’s discovery in all of its forms, and it is so beautiful to watch them fall in love and come to understand exactly what they mean to each other.

If it makes me weak to crave her, then let me be weak.
Being strong means nothing if I can’t have her.

The me I was always meant to become is who I am with her.

So. Many. Amazing. Quotes!

Like the other books in the series, this is a dark read, with lots of trigger warnings. Beware violence and murder, and really graphic blood play, that is a bit disturbing, but is such a big part of who Thatcher and Lyra are. Characters from the previous books all appear, and I loved seeing the boys together again.

The mystery aspect that has run through all of the books of the series is tied up in this one, paving the way for a change for the final book of the series, which will be Silas’s story. We get to meet his heroine, and it looks like it’s going to be an interesting ride for these two, and I can’t wait to dive into that one!

This is such a beautifully written story. I loved the emotion, and the romance stole my heart, and I loved seeing these two finally get their happy ending.

“A part of you died the night we met.” He presses his forehead to mine, letting me breathe him in. “Thank you for loving me with what remained.”

4 stars.
