This is a beautifully emotional story with the most gorgeous romance and a heartfelt journey for two wonderful characters. I loved this book.
This is the second book in the Only For series, and part of Natasha Madison’s hockey dynasty. Kirby and Lexi are the respective best friends of Jaxson and Ariella from the first book in this series, [book:Only For Tonight|231124910]. Lexi is also the daughter of Victor and Zoe (from This Is Wild, This Is, #2) so there is lots of character crossover with other books (and yes, there is Matthew and Max), but you can easily read this as a standalone.
Lexi is trapped in a toxic marriage. Her husband is a narcissist who controls and gaslights her constantly. She has lost who she used to be and is mostly isolated from her family, but she does what she can to keep the peace and doesn’t realise how bad her situation actually is.
Kirby is a hockey player who was smitten with Lexi the first time he met her. He learned she was married and completely backed off but when they work together for a charity project, they become friends. He recognises some of what she’s going through, having lived through it himself, and he supports her as a friend as best he can.
“I dare you not to let anyone darken your light.”
One shocking encounter is enough to open Lexi’s eyes and make her realise she has to get out. Months later, she’s slowly rebuilding her life when Kirby finds his way back into it (their best friends are married, after all). Their reconnection as friends is incredibly sweet, and the shift into something more feels slow, natural, and completely effortless.
Kirby’s feelings run deep, and he’s endlessly patient, caring, and supportive of Lexi. They talk, spend time together, and he shows up for her in every way she needs, and their friendship grows into the most beautiful relationship. And while Kirby is a total golden retriever, he’s also a dirty talker — the sexy time between these two is seriously steamy, and a refection of their complete trust in each other. But what really shines is the emotional connection between them. Their love is gorgeous, and I adored them together.
“I can be patient with you. With us. With this.” My hand moves from her leg to her cheek as my thumb catches the tear. “I’m going to be patient because you are worth it and deserve the time to figure this out too, Lexi.”
This book has both funny and sweet moments, and some really heartfelt and emotional messages. Abuse in a relationship isn’t just physical, and sometimes you can’t see the extent of it until you’re out of it. My heart ached for Lexi and all that she goes through (her call for help broke my heart and made me fall in love with this family all over again) but I loved her journey and watching her find her strength again, with Kirby cheering her on, allowing and encouraging her to life her best life every step of the way.
This is a really gorgeous read. Kirby and Lexi are great characters, I loved their story, and loved being back in this world.
4.5 stars.
I listened to this as an audiobook, narrated by Teddy Hamilton and Stephanie Rose, and they do a wonderful job bringing these characters to life. This was a really enjoyable book to listen to.
