Blurb

When I first met Jasmine Greene, she came in as raindrops.

I was the awkward musician, and she was the high school queen.
The only things we had in common were our music and our loneliness.

Something in her eyes told me her smile wasn’t always the truth.
Something in her voice gave me a hope I always wished to find.
And in a flash, she was gone.

Years later, she was standing in front of me on a street in New Orleans.
She was different, but so was I. Life made us colder. Harder. Isolated.

Caged.

Even though we were different, the broken pieces of me recognized the sadness in her.
Now she was back, and I wouldn’t make the mistake of letting her go again.

When I first met Jasmine Greene, she came in as raindrops.
When we met again, she was the darkest storm.

5 beautiful stars!

We weren’t meant to fall for one another, but when we blended together, we were some kind of beautiful.

Brittainy C. Cherry has a way with words that draw you in and never let you go. Her stories impact your life emotionally and Behind the Bars is no exception. It’s a gorgeous second-chance romance about love, loss, and healing. Devastating, real, and raw, it’s also heartwarming, beautiful, and full of hope.

Jasmine is an aspiring singer in New Orleans who loves soul music and wants a normal teenage life. Her mother doesn’t understand her and wants Jasmine to sing pop thinking it’s the way into the industry she herself missed out on years ago. Failure is not an option and Jasmine works hard to appease her mother even if it’s a detriment to herself.

Elliott is a boy who loves jazz and playing the saxophone. There are two sides to him – the shy bullied teen in school and the confident musician on the streets. Jasmine and Elliot meet at school and share an unlikely connection that slowly turns into love. When Jasmine is unexpectedly pulled away from New Orleans, their lives are changed forever. Having experienced their own pain and suffering over the years spent apart, can Jasmine and Elliott make it back to each other when so much stands in their way?

I know when I pick up a book by Brittainy C. Cherry I will experience a roller-coaster of emotion. This one is filled with feels and I am still reeling days after I finished it. The beautiful writing and the amazing characters make it easy to fully immerse yourself in this story. It starts out with Jasmine and Elliott as teenagers trying to get through high school. The harsh reality of what Jasmine and Elliott go through during this time was painful and their situations made me cry. Music brings them together and the beautiful bond they form and the support they provide strengthens their relationship. I loved watching them become more than just friends even if it’s brief.

After Jasmine leaves New Orleans, Elliott experiences a nightmare that crushes his soul. I cried so many tears and my heart broke the moment his own broke. I felt the devastation and hopelessness. I was angry, frustrated, and hurt. When Jasmine arrives back in New Orleans there is an emotional reunion, but not the one you would expect. Finding their way back to each other through the darkness and heartache is a difficult journey and we see the agonizing affects tragedy and circumstance have on a person.

Jasmine and Elliott are two characters who have touched my life. Both were complex and well developed. Jasmine was beautiful inside and out. I loved watching her grow into a strong, confident woman; however, I felt the ache that remained inside her as she tried to move on from the past.

“Sometimes I see it…that quiet storm that lives behind your eyes. I see the thunder that’s ripping you up inside as you try your best to pretend you’ve never even felt raindrops. Burying your hurts and your fears isn’t going to keep them from emerging. It’s only going to silence your real voice that’s begging to escape.”

Jasmine is a devoted friend and provides the unconditional love and support Elliott needs during the hardest times in his life. She knows when to push and when to back off. She’s perfect for Elliott and I love watching her fight for him.

Elliott, so shy and sweet, carries so much pain in his shoulders. He is an old soul with a tender heart. When he loves, he loves big. He cares so much for the people he holds dear that he will endure anything to make them safe. He faces overwhelming darkness and guilt and regret eat at him. It was gut-wrenching to see him so broken. However, his heart is so big, even when it’s hurting, his he is sweet, swoony, and genuine.

“You are every beat, every note, every bar. You are the lyrics, the harmony, and the melody. You were, are, and always will be my favorite song.”

Jasmine and Elliott are spectacular together. They love with a ferocity I could feel deep in my bones. Though opposites, they find solace in each other from the loneliness and pain they’ve felt for so long. They open up each other’s world and let the music give them hope.

“You’re the music in a mute world, and my heart beats because you’re here.”

Behind the Bars does a wonderful job showing the effects of a loving family verses a hurtful one and the difference between having people who push and cut you down and people who support and build you up. We meet several secondary characters who play such a vital role in the story and were on Jasmine and Elliott’s side from the beginning. They are amazing people who touched both their lives with love and wanted only the best for them. These wonderful people provided unconditional support and love, making Jasmine and Elliott stronger.

“Being related by blood doesn’t make someone family…Love does that.”

Behind the Bars is easily a new favorite and a must-read second-chance romance. It was fantastic!
