Lauren Blakely is one of my go to authors for romantic comedies but with Unbreak My Heart she joins my list of must read contemporary romance authors after showing the world this new side to her writing. Angsty, emotional, and a tearjerker that will pull at your heartstrings, it’s a story of tragedy, healing, hope, friendship, and love. This gorgeous second chance romance is full of feels and I couldn’t put it down.
The story draws you in and you’ll be fully invested in the characters and their lives as you turn the pages. The plot was heartbreaking but the beauty is in the healing, self-discovery, and love that the characters go through, and I loved everything emotional moment of this book!
Andrew is broken. He has lost so much and is numb. He isn’t living his life, he merely exists and he just wants to feel something. Anything. Andrew’s desperation is palpable and Holland makes him feel but he can’t just go back to the past in a time where they were young and in love. Things have changed and they are at a different place in their lives now.
She’s the last time I was truly happy, and I want that again so badly I’ll do nearly anything to get it, like spending time with her in this “just friends” state that I don’t understand. But I’m powerless to resist it.
Holland is amazing. She is understanding and nonjudgmental when it comes to Andrew. She doesn’t let the hurt of the past break her love for him and I love that she doesn’t hide her feelings. She has to make decisions that are painful but I understood exactly how she felt and where she was coming from every step of the way.
I love Andrew and Holland together. They have a history and shared a beautiful love one summer that was torn apart when autumn arrived. It broke them and it broke me as I got glimpses into the past and how their relationship was before everything.
One perfect summer.
That was the deal. We both knew the score.
We went in with eyes wide open, with promises not to fall in love.
And we did it anyway.
They fall back into their witty banter and easiness of spending time together but they can’t just jump into the relationship they had before. The longing is so great I wanted to cry out of pure sadness. I felt the conflict every time they are together and the pulling and pushing that consumes them. But it’s clear they can’t be together until they find peace within themselves and I found myself anxious to see this happen.
I desperately want to define us, but maybe what we are is in-between—straddling the past and the present, being in love and being friends, wanting and resisting.
Andrew and Holland know you can’t cover the pain with a bandage, you must find the strength inside yourself to overcome the tragedy. You must heal your heart before you can give it to someone else. And the journey is hard and intense but the growth they go through is beautiful and freeing.

Days after finishing, I still can’t stop thinking about this book. Though it’s a more serious story, Blakely doesn’t leave out humor completely. She blends light with dark effortlessly while still giving us a deeply moving story. I can now confidently say that I love this new side to Blakely. She is a well-rounded romance writer who can make you laugh as easily as cry but true to her style, I am left loving her new novel completely and it is one of my new favorites for sure.
I know there are no guarantees, not in life and not in love. But I’ll take what I can get, I’ll take what I can give. Another chance.

“What else did you do while you were here?”
“You want me to fill in the last three years?” she asks, with a laugh.
“Kind of.”
“Besides missing you?”
I scoff. “You didn’t miss me that much.”
She stares sharply at me. “Did you miss me?”
“You know I did.”
“And I missed you. I thought about you a lot,” she says, her words soft and tender, thawing a cold piece of me.
“So we were sad sacks, missing each other,” I tease.
“Maybe we were. I mean, look. It was hard, but I had to focus on school and so did you. We agreed to that, and I think we both did that. But I also didn’t ever stop thinking about you.”
Her admission kick-starts another part of my engine. I reach for a strand of her hair because it’s almost impossible to not touch her at a time like this.
