Synopsis

Truth: Penn Walker entered my life like a summer storm—dark, ominous, and filled with thunder.

After witnessing my husband’s murder, I didn’t have much of a heart left to offer a man.

But Penn took it all.
Every jagged shard.
Every broken bit.
Even the dirty and twisted pieces that I wish never existed.

Lie: I didn’t need him to save me.
Lie: I knew exactly who he was.
Lie: Losing him wouldn’t destroy me.

But that’s the thing about lies—you never know who to believe.

4.5 stars!

Wow, what an ending to an emotionally intense, dark and gritty duet! Aly Martinez has given us an emotional, romantic, fun and exciting finish to Penn and Cora’s story, giving me everything I wanted to see and more, and keeping me glued to my kindle from start to finish.

The Truth About Lies ended on a huge cliffhanger that left me desperate for more, and there’s not a whole lot I can say about this book that won’t be a spoiler so I’m going to try and keep this vague.

In the first book of this duet, we met Penn, a man hell-bent on vengeance, and Cora, a woman trying her best to survive hell and working to escape the life she was dumped into. Their paths crossed, and despite all of their intentions, they unexpectedly found themselves falling hard for each other.

“Truth,” I whispered against her temple. “I love you.”

All that they found together was threatened in the worst possible way, and now we get the second part of their story as they reveal all to each other, sort through the blurred lines of lie and truth, and figure out where to from here.

“Are you okay?” His big, warm palm came down on my thigh.
I blinked at him some more, waiting for the oasis to fade. “I don’t think I am.”
“You’re gonna be,” he promised. “From here on out, you’re gonna be.”

You may think you know what you’re going to get with this book, but you end up with so much more. There are twists and turns and surprising reveals, and as it all unfolds, Penn fights hard for his girl, his devotion and commitment to her absolutely melting my heart. And Cora gets to truly know the man that she fell so deeply in love with.

“Every smile. Every laugh. Every kiss. Every touch. That was me. That was us. And that was the truth.”

It’s not an easy path for them, but it’s a gorgeous love story that has both its sweet, fun moments and heartbreaking ones. It’s passionate, intense and emotional, and you can feel everything that is between them, and I loved watching them find their way forward together.

“We are the truth, Cora. We are the only truth in this entire fucked-up situation.”

And more than just the two of them, the involvement of key side characters in the action bring great depth to the story. River and Savannah are fantastic, and Penn’s devotion to them was just beautiful to see. And Drew continues to be pure awesome. There’s a fantastic side-story brewing for him, and I’m really excited that we’re going to get his story next year.

Intertwined with the love story and family drama is the dark and gritty mystery/suspense storyline that plays out so well, bringing excitement and intensity to the book, and tying up all the loose ends really cleverly.

“We were the only truth that mattered in any of this. We earned this. I won’t lose that. I won’t lose you.”

If all finishes off beautifully with an epilogue that left me beyond satisfied and giddy with happiness.

Aly Martinez – you continue to rock my world. 4.5 stars.

Originally from Savannah, Georgia, USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez now lives in South Carolina with her four young children.

Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys cheap wine, mystery leggings, and baked feta. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person.

She passes what little free time she has reading anything and everything she can get her hands on, preferably with a super-sized tumbler of wine by her side.
