About Unzipped

Wanted: Dating coach to help hot nerd win back the woman of his dreams…

Picture this – I’m ready to win back the love of my life, and I’m going big this time. We’re talking boom box, sing her name in the rain, let the whole damn neighborhood know I’m good and ready this time around. After all, if you’re going to grand gesture the ever-loving hell out of a second chance, you need to pull out all the stops.

There’s only one little problem.

My college girlfriend isn’t the one who shows up when I play my “I’ll do anything to win you back” tune.

The woman who flings open the second-floor window tells me my ex doesn’t live here anymore. But she’ll help me win her back. Anything for romance, anything for a guy so willing to go big for love. And that’s what I want at first. Until I get to know my new “romance coach” and discover she’s funny, clever, and keeps me on my toes. And boy, do I ever need that.

Now I don’t want to win anyone else’s heart. I want the woman who’s been helping me all along.

Trouble is – she thinks I’m in love with someone else, and when we take off on a road trip, everything I think I know about women is about to be unzipped and turned inside out.

Review

3.5 cute, cheesy, corny stars

This is a cute read from Lauren Blakely, with a fun set-up, great banter and laughs, and a sweet, fast moving romance amidst a healthy dose of pop culture references.

Kyler is 28 years old and is finally ready to step up and win back his college girlfriend, who dumped him eight years ago telling him to get back in touch when he had his life together. Now, as a successful thrill ride engineer, he’s ready to take the next step and he has his grand gesture all planned out. Except his epic efforts with a boom box fail big time when it’s a complete stranger who opens the door.

Finley is a comedy writer who is always on the lookout for inspiration. So when a Lloyd Dobbler wannabe literally lands on her doorstep, she pounces. She’s sorry that his grand plan was a fizz, but when she hears his story, she jumps on board to help him win back the one that got away, hoping to use his story to inspire her writing.

From the very beginning there is a sizzle between Kyler and Finley. And this whole book is scene after scene of quick-paced banter, wit and jokes, and romantic tropes based around 80s pop culture references, which I really enjoyed.

Kyler has gotten all of his romantic advice from 80s romcoms, which he loves to quote, and he is completely clueless when it comes to women. Finley has her work cut out for her as she teaches him how women think, what they want, and how he needs to act in different situations. At the same time, Kyler provides her with a goldmine for her TV show, and the two of them bouncing off each other is a lot of fun. But as they grow closer, the lines begin to blur, and by the time they head off together on a road trip for Kyler to finally meet up with his old girlfriend, everything has changed for both of them.

This is a quick read and a very predictable story. You know exactly where it’s going, but sitting back and watching it all happen is fun. There are some moments of steam, and though I enjoyed watching Kyler and Finley come together, I wasn’t really feeling it. Too many jokes and clichés, perhaps? I’m not sure. But it was still enjoyable.

The audiobook is narrated by Andie Arndt and Joe Arden, who do a great job. Andie can do no wrong, and Joe adds a lot of charm to Kyler’s cluelessness, and I particularly liked the way he delivered the relationships between Kyler and his brothers, which had me laughing out loud.

Not my favourite of Lauren’s, but still a fun and entertaining read.

3.5 stars.
