Everyone in New Orleans knows he’s heir to a dark family curse that both frightens and enthralls. To the locals, Devlin is the devil. To Rosie, he’s a man who’s stoking her wildest fantasies. When a brutal attack on her friend is linked to the de Vincents, he becomes a mystery she may be risking her life to solve.

Devlin knows what he wants from this sexy and adventurous woman. But what does Rosie want from him? It’s a question that becomes more pressing—and more dangerous—when he suspects her of prying into the shadows of his past.

Now, the legends surrounding the de Vincents may not be myths at all. But if she’s to discover the truth, she must follow them straight into the arms of the man she can’t resist—the handsome devil himself.

Review

“Remember what they say about dancing with the devil … sometimes you need to get burned.”

4 stars!

The final book in the de Vincente series, all of the secrets are coming out, and whoa, this was a wild ride! The story of eldest de Vincente brother, Devlin, brings a lot of series answers as we get to know this fabulously enigmatic character, and I loved this one!

Devlin has appeared in the previous books of the series, but he’s always been this serious, closed off, mysterious character. There’s been hints of something more about him, and I freaking loved getting to explore him as he is matched up with the most unlikely of heroines – boho ghost-hunter, Rosie. Rosie is the best friend of Nikki from the previous book, and she’s bubbly and bold, but she’s still grieving over a devastating loss from years ago and while she hasn’t shied away from men, she’s avoided relationships, preferring to concentrate on her passion for all things supernatural. And there’s nothing more haunted in New Orleans than the de Vincente estate, a property surrounded in mystery and an infamous, secretive family rumoured to be under a curse.

When Devlin meets Rosie, they clash instantly, but OMG the banter and bickering is absolutely gold! They go at it over anything and everything, and every single encounter is so freaking entertaining!

“Are you for real?” She let out a short laugh, looking away. Why did so many good-looking guys have to be such douche canoes? “Man, you are something else.”
“That I am.”
“That wasn’t a compliment.”
“You sure about that?”
“Uh, yeah. I am.”
“Hmm.” He sounded utterly dismissive.
She had to force her hands to unclench. “I think you’re the most uptight person I know.”
“You know nothing about me.”
“I know enough to know you need a hobby or a pastime. Maybe a different workout regimen to de-stress or you need to get laid. Something to loosen you up a bit.”
His lips parted as he stared down at her. He looked
affronted. Like if he had pearls, he’d be clutching them. “Did you seriously just tell me I needed to get laid?”
Rosie rolled her eyes. “Did you seriously just prove what I said?”
A moment passed. “Are you volunteering?”

It’s SO much fun, and as Rosie is drawn time and time again into Devlin’s world, the two of them find themselves in each other’s spaces over and over again, and I loved the flirty teasing and arguing. There is intense dislike on both parts, but there’s a strong attraction there too, and there’s a real battle between their constant antagonism and their growing lust, and the sexual tension is absolutely sensational

Devlin shifted just the slightest, and the next breath Rosie took lodged in her throat. She felt him against her stomach, thick and hard, and unless he had something weird in the front of his pants, he was totally turned on.
So was she.
And they were both apparently freaks, because she’d just tried to shove him and he had just threatened her, but here they were, utterly aroused, and there was a really good chance she needed to find a therapist stat.

“Are we going to pretend like you don’t feel me?” he asked, rather calmly.
“Yes,” she snapped.
“How’s that working out for you?”
“Just great.” The moment those words came out of her mouth, she realized how ridiculous they sounded.
Devlin’s lips twitched.

It’s such a fantastic dynamic as the feisty pixie takes on the arrogant a-hole with brutal honesty, holding nothing back, and their connection becomes something beautifully heartfelt and emotional as they begin to open up to each other and we get to see the complexity of Devlin and come to know this secretive and misunderstood character like never before.

Even his brothers were afraid of him. They had no reason to be, but he understood why. After all, he was willing to go there to protect his brothers, do the unthinkable. But they didn’t know what he knew, and it would stay that way. He was their shield and that would never change.

It’s a wonderful unveiling of Devlin, and we start to see the softer side of him just as Rosie does, and it’s no wonder she falls for him! The love story is gorgeous! An emotional and heartfelt slow burn that is also seriously sexy. It’s just gorgeous!

“You’re a lot of things.” She cupped the back of his head. “And I want you. All of you.”
“You have me.”

But there are secrets to be revealed, and some absolutely shocking twists and turns as we finally get the answers we’ve been seeking, and it’s suspenseful, exciting and fantastically unexpected. At one point I think I was actually reading with my mouth wide open in surprise as it all unfolded. And of course Lucien and Gabe and their girls are along for the ride and I loved catching up with them.

JLA has finished off the series really well. All questions are answered, all loose ends are tied up, and we get a glimpse of each of the couples into the future, which I loved. This is a great read, really imaginative, and I loved it!

4 stars.
