Every workplace has that one person you don’t want to mess with.

At James & Peterson Investigations, that would be Cameron Grant: sullen, grouchy, intimidating, oh yeah, and sexy as hell. He can make your soul wither with a single disapproving glare. And he never, ever socialises with his co-workers.

This is why Maisie Wilkins, happy-go-lucky ray of sunshine, can’t fathom why Cameron finally decided to show up at their annual office Christmas party. Every year he received an invite, and every year he failed to attend. But not this year.

Curious as to why he’s there, Maisie can’t resist sitting next to Cameron. Before she knows it, she’s had one too many drinks and is drunkenly hailing a cab back to his place. Office party flings are not something she normally does, but despite his intimidating character, Cameron has a charm she can’t resist. Or maybe it was just those five gin and tonics blurring her judgement.

Whatever the reason, Maisie now has to navigate the awkward, tension filled waters of sharing an office with someone she’s slept with.

Oh, the joys of the holidays!

*This story features Cameron Grant, Ellen’s cranky and curmudgeonly brother from Fauxmance.

Review

4.5 stars!!

Happy-Go-Lucky is a sweet, swoony, opposites attract office romance with a little bit of mystery and a whole lot of heart. Captivating from the start, I couldn’t put it down, and I thoroughly enjoyed Maisie and Cameron’s love story!

Maisie Wilkins, aka Happy-Go-Lucky, is a primary researcher in a private investigation firm. She is such a nice person, always has a smile, and is a pleaser. She cares what people think which is the complete opposite of Cameron Grant. Cameron is the head investigator at the firm. He’s a grouch, albeit a handsome grouch, and someone you don’t mess with. He rarely shows emotion, he definitely doesn’t like to socialize, and unlike Maisie, he doesn’t care what people think or say about him.

When Cameron shows up at the company Christmas party for the first time ever, Maisie heads over to talk to him. He is intimidating but his presence is so unlike him that she can’t let it go, determined to find out why he is there. Little does Maisie know that taking that seat next to Cameron would be the start of a wonderful romance that takes them by surprise.

Maisie and Cameron could not be more different when it comes to the way they act in the work setting but things change the more time they spend together. They connect and realize they actually get along well and enjoy each other’s company. They may share some awkward moments but they are sweet, honest, and entertaining as they navigate their new relationship.

Cameron and Maisie are mature, functional, and so much fun as a couple. The banter, the laughs, and the feels are well written, and every time they are together, I couldn’t stop a smile from forming. They are just so good together with their sweet, swoony, steamy goodness.

“I think life might be too short to deny myself someone as amazing as you.”

I loved that there is so much more to these characters than meets the eye. They are complicated and my heart hurt for them. They offered unconditional support and they understood each other’s pain. They bring out the best in one another, and I could feel what they meant to each other as Cameron and Maisie open up and learn to trust. They both change as the story progresses and the character growth is well developed.

Happy-go-lucky Maisie might’ve held back her hurt, plastered a smile on her face and pretended everything was hunky-dory. But this Maisie, the new one I’d started to become over the last few weeks, refused to be verbally thrashed by people who were supposed to be my co-workers.

Though they start out with a bang, Cameron and Maisie’s love story is more of a slow burn romance. There are road blocks that make it hard to be together but they don’t let the challenges ruin what is happening between them. They are honest with their feelings and there isn’t much back and forth or over-the-top drama between them which I found refreshing.

Because of the nature of their jobs, there is a bit of suspense that adds another layer to the story. I love the investigation side and the way the mystery unfolds. It was exciting and I wanted to solve the case as much as they did.

Overall, Happy-Go-Lucky was an entertaining, captivating read that is easy to get lost in. I adored Maisie and Cameron, and I loved the secondary characters, too. I would love for Cameron’s brother, Nick, to get a book, and I also want more of Lilah, especially after the little hint we get of her in the epilogue.
