Blurb

I fell in love with Sydney Hastings when I was ten years old.
At sixteen, we whispered promises of forever.
When I was twenty-two I broke them all. I left her and promised never to return.

After my father’s death, I’m forced to go home to Sugarloaf for six months. She’ll be everywhere, no longer just in my memories and regrets.

When we’re together, it’s as though time never stopped. She’s still the one I want, but I don’t deserve her. Instead of apologizing, I take that beautiful, broken woman in my arms. But after that, it’s her turn to leave me.

Now I have to fight. For her. For us. For the life we both want …

4 angsty second-chance stars

Corinne Michaels knows how to bring the angsty feels, and she absolutely brought it with this story! The second book in the Arrowood Brothers series, this is the story of eldest Arrowood brother, Declan, and it’s a dramatic and emotional second-chance-romance that is full of angsty longing, and it’s an absolutely beautiful read.

Declan and Sydney’s story was hinted at in the first book. They fell in love as teenagers and were each other’s whole world. They loved each other completely and were planning a future together when Declan’s life fell apart, and he broke Sydney’s heart and left town with his brothers. Eight years later and Declan is forced back to his hometown, living on his family’s old farm as part of the legal requirement for him and his brothers to claim their inheritance. He’s not happy to be there, never having wanted to return, partly because of his bad memories, and mostly because Sydney is there.

After all this time, I would’ve hoped to be over her, but then how do you really get over losing the only thing you ever wanted?

My heart and soul have always belonged to one person, and it never will be anyone else’s.

From the moment we see them together, it’s clear that Declan and Sydney are still in love, and still want each other. It’s a fact that neither of them dispute, and they actually admit it quite openly. But there is a lot of hurt between them. Declan broke both of their hearts when he left, and Sydney still hasn’t fully recovered, and the feels are there from the very first moment.

“A single moment can define a lifetime.” …
“And the decision you made in that moment defined my life.”
“I was letting you go.”
She laughs once and steps back. “You knew me better than that. You knew my heart was always and forever going to be yours.”
“I didn’t deserve it.”
“Maybe not, but”—she shrugs—“it was yours, and I guess the worst part is … that it still is.”

The angst in this book! Oh my God! There is so much want and longing between Declan and Sydney, it practically drips off the page. There is page after page of swoony declarations of undying love, but Declan has his reasons for keeping his distance from Sydney. Personally, I thought those reasons were so frustrating. I got it in the beginning, I even got it when he first returned, but the longer the back and forth went on, OMG, I wanted to smack him! When he’s not being dramatic, it’s so easy between them! They have fun together, their chemistry is sizzling, they literally can’t keep away from each other, and every encounter just sizzles with the emotion between them. But he is a stubborn, stubborn man who is doing what he thinks is best . It’s frustrating, for sure, as they pretty much have the same conversation over and over and over again, but on the plus side, it allows Sydney to shine! She’s a strong woman who knows her heart, and she’s in a really difficult situation. I could absolutely understand where she was at, and I ached for her and all that she went through. But I thought she handled it all so well.

I would’ve loved him with everything I am. I do now, but it isn’t enough. Declan and I are the tragic love story.

As I said, there is a lot of back and forth, but their story is all about fighting for each other, and they both get the opportunity to do just that. And though it was frustrating, I loved their honesty, the way they held nothing back, and I loved that I could feel it all with them. Their journey was beautifully written.

“I love you. I love you for the memories we made and the ones I want us to make.”

We get to see more of Connor, Ellie and little Hadley, and the other Arrowood brothers come to town, and there’s a great lead-in to Sean’s friends-to-lovers story up next.

I really enjoyed this one. Probably a little heavy on the angst and drama for me, but I was there for the feels and the epic romance, and I certainly got that. The book finishes beautifully, again with the feels, and I loved seeing Declan and Sydney get the happy ending that they both deserved.

4 stars.
