Can you live a lie?

It’s a ghost town, this place that haunts me, the one that made me.

It’s clear to me that I’ll never outgrow Triple Falls or outlive the time I spent here.

I can still feel them all, my boys of summer.
Even when I’d sensed the danger, I gave in.

I didn’t heed a single warning. I let my sickness, my love, both rule and ruin me. I played my part, eyes wide open, tempting fate until it delivered.

There was never going to be an escape.

All of us are to blame for what happened. All of us serving our own sentences. We were careless and reckless, thinking our youth made us indestructible, exempt from our sins, and it cost us all.

I’m done pretending I didn’t leave the largest part of me between these hills and valleys, between the sea of trees that hold my secrets.

It’s the reason I’m back. To make peace with my fate.

And if I can’t grieve enough to cure myself in my time here, I’ll remain sick. That will be my curse.

But it’s time to confess, to myself more so than any other, that I’d hindered my chances because of the way I was built, and because of the men who built me.

At this point, I just want to make peace with who I am, no matter what ending I get.

Because I can no longer live a lie.

Review

“It was a year. Just one year. But it changed everything for me.”

5 stars

Holy hell. I just finished this book, and I’m literally gobsmacked. What a read! A raw, intense, angsty and emotional rollercoaster of a read that is such a twisty mindfuck that I never knew what was coming. I had no idea what I was supposed to be feeling, I just know that I felt everything, and I was so sucked into this story that I couldn’t put it down. What an epic conclusion to the duet!

I came back to declare war on my memories, to draw my lines, and I’m already disgusted with just how relieved I am by reclaiming, owning my dark side.

This book picks up immediately where Flock left off and we are sucked back into Cecilia’s story – a woman unable to move on from her past and revisiting the place where her whole life changed, and the men who changed it. The first book was a complete surprise, and I literally can’t say anything without spoiling the duet, so I will just say to strap yourself in for an original, unexpected journey that is so well constructed (seriously, I can’t even imagine the process Kate Stewart went through to plot this all out!), with an absolutely incredible love story.

“You said we can never be.”
He presses in. “We. Fucking. Are.”

I don’t even know what to say about the love story, because it’s unlike nothing I’ve ever read.

“Loving you made me sick, and I don’t ever want to get well.”

I couldn’t get enough just watching it all unfold, and, again, the feels are intense. I felt everything along with Cecilia, and the intensity of it just explodes of the page! And OMG, it is so freaking sexy!

“Yours. I was always supposed to be yours,” I say as he nods and crushes me with his kiss.

It’s dark and twisted, and it’s not easy to read in places, but OMG, it captured my heart. I railed and fumed, I cried and ached, and I felt so freaking much! And that switch from past to present pushes everything up another notch. Just wow. Cecilia’s journey is an amazing story, and I admire her so much for handling everything that she goes through. Her strength is amazing, and her perseverance and tenacity make her an amazing heroine, and I adored the way she fought for what she wanted.

“Your heart is not your weakness, Cecilia. It’s mine.”

It’s an amazing read, with twists and turns, surprising reveals, drama, angst, romance, and so much emotion. It physically hurt at times, and I had several teary moments, but I embraced them all. This story was brilliantly plotted out from beginning to end, and I finished it feeling wrung out but immensely satisfied.

“If you leave, I’ll come after you. If you change your mind, I’ll change it back. I’ll fight so fucking hard for you every single day, so you never question if you made the right choice.”

Just genius. 5 stars.
