4 stars

This is such a gorgeous read – a story of redemption for an NHL bad boy as he gets the second chance he never expected with the woman he’s always loved, now a single mother looking for her own second chance.

This is the fourth book of the Fury series, but it could be read as a standalone. We saw a bit of Emerson in the last book of the series, he is Charlotte’s twin brother, and a troubled soul, but there is a great introduction given to his story and him as a character, so you could start with this one. Just beware that the characters from the previous books all feature in this one.

Emerson Greene was the party boy in college. He craved attention and got hooked on drugs, and his life went into a downward spiral which hit rock bottom when his best friend was killed in a car accident, and he lost the girl that he loved. He’s been pretty much out of control ever since, but after years of battling his demons, he is sober and fighting to get his life back on track. He has good friends and teammates around him, and he is working hard to hold onto his place in the Chicago Fury. But everything is still a struggle.

I have absolutely no fucking clue who I am.
I’m just a guy, who likes hockey. I don’t have any hobbies, no traits, nothing spectacular about me. I’m just a guy who as my rehab therapist told me, is desperately trying to figure out what I can give to the ones around me.

Sofia Morgan has endured her own heartache, but she is a strong and confident woman and she has pulled herself together and created a good life for her and her young son. She and Emerson were friends in college, but she was always wary of him and his wild behaviour. And when she saw his life spiral, she had to cut ties.

When Emerson and Sofia see each other again in the present, they are both shaken. They didn’t expect it, but with one glace, Emerson knows that he can’t let her get away again.

What do you do when you look at the only girl you’ve ever loved and know you’re not enough for her?
You hope she sees the good that’s still left.

It’s a fantastic set up, and as all of the little pieces slipped into place, I was fully on board for the story that was to come. Emerson and Sofia’s past is messy, but they have a strong connection, and he is determined to prove that he has changed. It’s absolutely gorgeous to see him with his heart on his sleeve, fighting to have the place in Sofia and her son’s life that he’s always wanted.

I didn’t just want to collide with Sofia. I didn’t want her to become collateral damage that we’d have to crawl out of bent and broken.
I wanted to learn to love her in the way she deserved. The soft kind of love she couldn’t live without.
I was going to fall in love with her all over again, the right way, and hopefully, if I do it right, she’ll fall just as hard.

It’s a beautifully unfolding story, and in the middle of the romantic back-and-forth is the relationship that Emerson develops with little Ezekiel. It’s freaking adorable, and I loved seeing the two spend time together as Z hero worships Emerson, and the big, broody hockey player cares so much for the little boy, bringing him out of his shell and making him smile. It’s impossible to resist, and Sofia finds herself falling for the new and improved Emerson.

I didn’t notice how Emerson had slowly crept into the spaces of my heart and started making a home there.

And then there is the love story… *dreamy sigh*. Emerson is determined, yet gentle and patient, but he doesn’t hold anything back from Sofia. There are emotional scenes between them, sweet and tender moments, and a whole lot of sexual tension, and it feels a bit like a slow burn as Sofia slowly lets Emerson in.

“I know what I want. I know I’m in love with you, and I know you’re not ready to say that back to me yet, but it’s okay, because I’ll wait. I’ll wait until I’m inside your heart the way you’ve been dancing inside of mine.”

I was so happy when they finally got their shot, and the passion between them is explosive! But the past still has its hold on them, and they have challenges to overcome. There is some drama, but it works as a turning point for them to realise what they want and build the courage to fight for it, and of course there’s a beautifully happy ending

“I’m absolutely, irrevocably, desperately yours … I need you to keep loving me … Because I live for it.”

With the four main men of the series now having had their stories told, I suspect the series will move to the next generation. This book has an epilogue which gives us a glimpse of the future, and I am freaking excited for what may be to come!

Loved this one – 4 stars.
