Everyone said that Lupe Martínez was a good kid. She listened to her mom, she helped at the homeless shelter, she got good grades, and she had a bright future ahead of her.

Until she disappeared.

Now no one knows what to think. The police are sure she ran away; her mother is sure she didn’t. Days have passed and no one knows what to do until her family priest suggests they call in an old friend.

very old friend.

Carwyn ap Bryn and Brigid Connor are two elemental vampires finding the lost, righting wrongs, and searching for meaning in the endless stretch of immortality they’ve been granted.

And trying not to blow things up, but that might be more aspirational.

Saint’s Passage is the first book in the paranormal mystery series, Elemental Covenant by Elizabeth Hunter, USA Today bestselling author of the Elemental Legacy series, the Glimmer Lake Series, and the Irin Chronicles.

3.5 stars

I’m a big fan of Elizabeth Hunter’s Elemental Mysteries series, and its spin-off, Elemental World. Well, now the spin-off has a spin-off, as beloved characters, Carwyn and Brigid branch off into the Elemental Covenant series, which will follow the couple as they take on new challenges protecting, defending and searching for the lost.

Their first mission brings them to LA to investigate a teenager who has gone missing. Lupe Martinez was a good girl with a big heart, and she vanished into thin air while helping the homeless, so her family priest contacts his old colleague, Carwyn, and his wife, Brigid, to help.

God, I love Carwyn! Huge, hilarious, easy-going and deeply caring, he is a huge highlight of this paranormal world, for me, and I was thrilled to be back with him and his feisty wife. We get to see lots of time with them being together, married, and happy (and still passionately hot for each other!), and as they investigate the missing girl, it brings up questions about their own future and what they want to do with it.

There’s action, intrigue and excitement, and I thought the mystery/suspense storyline was really well done. I was engaged the whole way through as the case of the missing girl turns into something so much bigger than either of them were expecting, and I loved seeing the storyline twist and turn as it built to the exciting climax – the paranormal powers on display making it even more fun.

“Justice,” Carwyn whispered, “doesn’t always mend with mercy. Sometimes it mends with blood.”

We get to check in some characters from earlier in the series – I particularly liked Brigid’s girl time, and the glimpses of Gio and Beatrice, but mostly I just loved being back with Carwyn and Brigid, seeing them so happy together and still so in love, their relationship a great mix of playfulness, passion, respect and deep emotion.

He met her eyes. “You are the greatest gift of my eternity.”

Swoon!

This is a really solid read. There’s a lot of potential with this series and I’m really excited to see where it all goes from here.

3.5 stars.
