This is an enjoyable romance. A satisfyingly easy read that is sweet and sexy with a little bit of drama, and a great introduction to the Maverick Montana series.

Sophie is a landscape architect and her latest project is to design a golf course in rural Montana. There has been some local backlash to the proposed development, so she is in town to try and win support when she is literally swept off her feet by a hot cowboy on horseback.

Jake is a local ranch owner, a member of the local native tribe, and a single father to an adorable little girl. He is a well-respected lawyer and is leading the legal fight in opposition to the new development, so he’s the man who will be going head to head with Sophie. But that doesn’t stop him from making a play for the sexy city girl, and we get a fun and intense push and pull as Jake makes grand alpha claims and Sophie tries to ignore the attraction that so clearly exists between them.

“Go ahead and run, Sunshine. I caught you once before.” The door closed, but he made sure she could still hear him. “And I will again.”

I’m a big fan of Rebecca Zanetti, and this book has vibes of Kristen Ashley, so I was right on board for everything that unfolds between these two. Jake is alpha all the way, and Sophie is smart and sassy, and together they are on fire. They bicker and banter, and Jake gets all growly and possessive, and the chemistry between them is undeniable. And when they finally give in to all of that sexual tension, it’s hot as all hell. Sophie is only in town temporarily, so they agree to a short fling, but they both soon realise the potential they have to build something incredible together.

But Jake is a country boy with strong family ties while Sophie is a city girl through and through. Their lives are complete opposites, and they are fighting for different causes. Watching them work through those issues and figure out what they want, and the significance of what they have found in each other, is a gorgeous journey.

“I want your heart.” His mouth dipped to replace his hand. “You already have mine.”

I really enjoyed this book. Jake and Sophie are great, and there is a fantastic bunch of supporting characters that add a lot to the story, and to the small-town feel of the story. Jake’s daughter, Layla, is a delight, and I particularly loved getting to know Jake’s brothers and sister, who already have wonderful set-ups for their books, and I can’t wait to continue on with the series.
