Dr. Mariana Lopez has finally stopped bailing friends out of difficult situations. Well, except for substituting as the leader for another anger management group, pitching in as a campaign strategist for a prospective sheriff, and babysitting three dogs. Even with such a full life, she can feel the danger around her—a sense that something isn’t right. Nightmares harass her, until the real thing comes to life, and only the dark and sexy male sitting in her group can save her. However, with safety comes a price she might not be willing to pay.

Raine Maxwell is one of the Maxwells out of Montana, which means he’s not only one of the most deadly vampires alive, but his path is set and his mate has been chosen for him. To save him—to continue his line. Unfortunately, his mate is an enhanced human female who has no idea of her abilities, of his species, or of her future. He’d like to lead her gently into this new world, but his people aren’t the only ones who’ve found her, which puts her into more danger than she can imagine. Plus, in order to follow his laws, he only has one week to convince her that immortality with him is what she wants—and needs.

Review

3.5 stars!

This is the third novella in the Dark Protectors/Rebels series, and it’s another fun and exciting ride in a paranormal world that I cannot get enough of.

These books are a spin-off from the Dark Protectors series, and can be read independently of those books but the Rebels books should definitely be read in order as the storyline is continuous, focusing on a different couple in each book. The characters are all part of an anger management group which is made up of mostly badass supernatural beings – though human group leader, Dr Mariana Lopez has no idea.

Mariana moved to a small town in Indiana to escape a stalker, and has settled in well to her new community. But she is plagued by nightmares and a feeling that something is wrong, and it seems that her stalker is making a comeback when she starts to receive frightening messages once again. Then there’s the matter of her inconvenient lusting after one of her group members, the gorgeous Raine.

Raine is a vampire/demon hybrid and is super powerful, but he is living with a deadly curse that will cut his life short unless he can find his mate and claim her. Well, he’s found her, and it’s none other than Mariana. She has no clue about the supernatural world, and because Raine has no plans to actually mate her, he is bound by laws not to tell her anything about it. But that doesn’t mean he can’t protect her once he realises she is in danger.

It’s all action from the very beginning, and being a novella, the story moves at a fast pace. So as soon as Raine learns what’s going on with Mariana, he moves himself into her house against her will, getting all up in her business so that he can protect her, and it’s so entertaining.

She cleared her throat, forcing herself to stare him right in the eyes. “I don’t go for the alpha-male act, dickhead.”
His smile was slow and held enough warning that she stopped breathing. “Oh, sweetheart. Don’t play games with me, and don’t lie to either one of us. You’re as aroused right now as I am, and you should definitely understand that this isn’t an act.”

There’s great chemistry between the two of them, and though neither of them deny their attraction, Raine is determined not to drag Mariana into his world, and into the path of his enemies. So we get this wonderfully angsty sexual tension that builds and builds until their inevitable coming together (which is so very hot!). And all the while they are battling unknown danger, continued threats, and an over-zealous sheriff who believes Raine is actually the bad guy. It’s lots of fun, and I couldn’t put this book down, desperate to know how it was all going to work out.

Characters from the previous book are on hand to help, and we get introduced to some of Raine’s brothers, and their banter-filled interactions are so much fun. I’m hoping we get to see more of them in the future.

I really enjoyed this book. Funny, sexy and suspenseful with great action, it’s a great read. I do wish it would have been a bit longer though. There is so much to Raine’s background that I wanted to know more about, and the romance is wrapped up quickly, I would have liked just a little bit more of that, too. But overall, it’s definitely a great addition to the series.

3.5 stars!

Rebecca Zanetti is the author of over fifty romantic suspense and dark paranormal romances, and her books have appeared multiple times on the New York Times, USA Today, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and iBooks bestseller lists. The New York Times reviews has found that in her books, “humor surfaces in even the tensest moments, giving the high-stakes drama humanity and warmth.” She lives in the wilds of the Pacific Northwest with her own Alpha hero, two kids, a couple of dogs, a crazy cat…and a huge extended family. She believes strongly in luck, karma, and working her butt off…and she thinks one of the best things about being an author, unlike the lawyer she used to be, is that she can let the crazy out.
