From the fog-shrouded bay of San Francisco to the dark cobblestone streets of Helsinki and all the hidden places in-between, The Blood is Love takes the reader on a sensual and twisted journey deep into Lenore and Solon’s lush vampire world in this thrilling sequel to Black Sunshine.

When Lenore Warwick turned twenty-one, she expected lots of bar-hopping, parties with friends, and the occasional hookup. What she got was the realization that she’s both a witch and a vampire, and that there are things in this world that want her dead. Thank god she has her enigmatic vampire lover, Absolon Stavig, to help show her the ropes. But while Lenore struggles to fit into her new topsy turvy world, full of blood, sex, and magic, she also has to contend with her messy and complicated love for a vampire who isn’t always what he seems.

To make matters worse, her real father, Jeremias, a powerful warlock from the dark side, has professed an interest in her, while Solon’s father, the depraved vampire king Skarde, is intent on destroying everything she loves. When Solon and Lenore have to travel to Finland to work alongside Solon’s charming and vicious brother, Kaleid, in an attempt to defeat Skarde once and for all, the two of them enter a bloody new world that neither of them are prepared for. Even if their love survives the carnage to come, the chances of them getting out of there alive are slim. Good thing they like to take their chances.

4 stars

This is the second book in the Dark Eyes (duet/series… not sure yet), and the continuation of Lenore and Solon’s paranormal gothic love story.  It’s an exciting, dramatic read, with some great twists and turns, and I felt the love story way more than the first book.  I really enjoyed this one!

In the first book of the series, Black Sunshine, we met Lenore just as she was on the verge of Becoming a vampire. She was abducted/taken in by ancient vampire, Solon, who saw her through her transition, and where she learned all about his world, her own secret paranormal history as a vampire/witch hybrid and her subsequent magical powers, and the two of them fell in epic, undying love.

When this book begins, Lenore is still working to figure out her new world, but one thing that isn’t in doubt is her love and passion for the man who is guiding her through it. She and Solon are together, strong, and blissfully committed, and I was really feeling their connection and their love for each other.

“I need to get use to this. To what I am.”
“And what you are is mine.”

And they are still lusting madly for each other. The sex in this book is off the charts hot. It’s a little bit kinky, and there are some really unusual and somewhat creepy scenes, but it adds to the gothic vibe of the book, and this paranormal world as a whole, and it shows just how connected Lenore and Solon are as a couple.

Things become complicated when more of Solon’s dark past is uncovered, and then both of their fathers come in to play – Lenore’s powerful warlock father who has so much he wants to teach her about his dark powers, and Solon’s father, the first vampire, whose evil plans could wreak havoc upon the world. And then Solon’s brother, Kaleid comes to visit, whisking the two of them away to magical Finland where they team up with an unlikely crew to help them battle the bad guys and save the world.

It’s a wildly exciting ride, full of magic, danger, and wild supernatural powers, and Halle creates this creepy, gothic vibe that feels part paranormal/part spooky horror (some of these scenes are so freaking creepy, and Halle writes it well). The intensity is ramped up right along with the action to drag you into a surprising and unexpected climax of the story which had me unable to put the book down, desperate to see how it was all going to work out.

But at the heart of it all is Lenore’s journey to discover and come to terms with who she is and what she is capable of and, of course, the beautifully emotional love story that is full of passion and intensity.

“For all time, Lenore … You’re mine for all time.”

I enjoyed being back in this world that is wonderfully dark and creepy, but the characters and their stories bring humour, wit and sarcasm, which keeps things light and fun. I loved catching up with characters from the last book, and there are some great teases there for the upcoming spin-off novel, NIGHTWOLF (Wolf and Amethyst – yes!). And the new characters introduced broaden this world even more, and I’m really looking forward to exploring it further.

A great read that kept me hooked from start to finish, with an ending that left me satisfied.

4 stars!
