What happens when the love of your life refuses to love you back?

Jesse McCallister.

Motocross legend. Reckless heartbreaker. And the love of my life.
Too bad he only thought of me as his best friend’s little sister.
Naïve and innocent. Only eighteen. Completely off-limits.

Unrequited love… was there anything more painful?
Turns out there was—when he kisses you but has no memory of it.
When he tells you his heart was broken, and he doesn’t believe in love.
When he doesn’t want you kissing anyone else, but you’re stuck in the friend zone.

Despite the odds stacked against us, my foolish heart refused to stop loving him.
Now I’m falling under his spell. Drowning in his perfect lies. Addicted to his stolen glances and forbidden kisses.
I’m on a collision course with disaster and only one thing is certain… Jesse McCallister is going to ruin me.

Another gorgeous read from Emery Rose! This book is an intense and emotional ride with wonderful characters and fantastic chemistry. A childhood crush/brother’s best friend, age gap, unrequited love story written with lots of heart, I loved it!

Jesse McCallister is the third of the McCallister boys to have their stories told in this series (he’s the brother of Jude, hero from book #1, When the Stars Fall. He is a professional motocross rider who has just stepped away from his sport, and is back in his small home town feeling lost and trying to figure his life out.

Quinn is the younger sister of Jesse’s best friend, Mason. They have always shared a close relationship, he has always been there for her, and she has loved him for as long as she can remember. And despite their nine-year age gap, now that she’s 18, she’s desperate to finally make him see her as more than just a kid.

It wasn’t just a girlhood crush. My love for him was so deeply embedded that I’d have to rip out a piece of my heart to be free of it.

The feelings in this book are intense from the start. I could feel the connection between Jesse and Quinn, and you can tell that their bond is special. I could feel Quinn’s love and longing for the man she’s always loved, and while Jesse doesn’t own his feelings, you can tell that there’s something there. And it’s that unspoken thing that makes this such an irresistible dynamic. You know that Jesse has feelings, he just doesn’t realise or accept it, and watching him start to see Quinn in a whole different light was so gorgeous!

He was my friend and my soul mate. He was everything I’d always dreamed he would be.
Unforgettable. Irreplaceable. The love of my life.
If only I could be his too.

They are very slow to figure things out, so we get this absolutely delicious situation where there’s intense stares, secret touches and kisses, and heartclenching ‘moments’ between them, plus highly entertaining moments where their jealousy and possessiveness overwhelms them. Quinn is bold and brave, and she puts herself out there with Jesse, which I absolutely loved! But he has a whole series of issues that he needs to wrestle with, and his feelings for Quinn are just one of those. He cares so deeply for her, but there’s a lot standing in their way. It’s emotional and exciting, with well-written angst that makes it all so intense, and I couldn’t wait to see what would happen between them.

Love makes you reckless. All logic and reason flew out the window, and you let your emotions take the driver’s seat.
You took your chances, pretending to be brave while you ignored the consequences.
That’s how it was for me, anyway.

All of that drama is absolutely worth it when we get to see these two come together. Their friendship is so special, they laugh, they play, they are there for each other, they enjoy each other, they ‘get’ each other. And when things shift for them, it may be hard-fought-for, but it’s natural and so beautiful. They truly seem like soulmates and it feels so right for them, the playfulness of their friendship is still there, the chemistry sizzles, and there’s a fantastic balance of fun, emotion and sexy time. I loved seeing them together.

“I don’t want to be reckless with you.”
“I want to be reckless.”

But they still have issues to overcome – their families, their pasts, and their plans for the future all have to be considered, and Jesse’s not even sure what he’s capable of when it comes to love. It’s an emotional ride watching them figure it all out.

Love was a leap of faith, wasn’t it? It was risky to put your heart on the line.
Love could heal you, or it could destroy you.
What was braver, or more foolish, than offering up your heard to someone and saying,
Take it. It’s yours. Treat it with care. It’s fragile and breakable.
Nothing. Absolutely nothing.

But it’s worth it! It’s such a beautiful love story, and I loved seeing these two find their HEA.

“You’re worth it, Quinn. You’re worth everything.”

The characters from the previous books appear, and I loved catching up with them again – seeing where they are at, living out their HEAs and watching them be there for Jesse was such a treat. I can’t wait for the rest of the boys to get their books, and I’m hoping that Quinn’s brothers will become a part of the series and we’ll get books for them, too, because they are a fantastic bunch, and there are some potentially awesome stories just begging to be told!

I loved this book, and I’m loving this series! The stories are emotional and intense with chemistry-filled, passionate romance, and I can’t wait for more.
