Oh, what a beautiful story! A heartfelt and emotional marriage-of-convenience romance between two lonely people with traumatic histories, and a gorgeous story of a family coming together in very difficult circumstances. With a touch of suspense and well-developed drama, this is a fantastic read that had me captivated from start to finish.

I was so thrilled when I learned that Catherine Cowles was heading back to her Sutter Lake series – I love these books, and though each can be read as a standalone, as a fan of the series, I loved catching up with these characters again.

Anna came to Sutter Lake for a fresh start after finding herself in devastating trouble as a teenager. She moved into a local shelter, Hope House, and now, years later, she runs it and she loves her job. Mason works with Cain (IT genius and security badass from the last book, Beautifully Broken Control). He volunteers at Hope House and has definitely noticed the beautiful manager, but she has been so viciously hurt in the past, she wants nothing to do with men, and does her best to keep him at arm’s length.

He was everything I’d avoided since I was fifteen. The spark I felt every time our eyes met meant I needed to run in the opposite direction. But that running and avoiding meant I hadn’t had a chance to truly get to know the man in front of me.

But then tragedy strikes and Anna is left trying to pick up the pieces of the only family she has. Her young niece and nephew are in her care, and in order to keep them, she needs to prove herself a fit and stable guardian – and with her history, it’s almost impossible. Enter Mason who offers to marry her to provide the perceived stability and support that she so desperately needs to prove. With little other option, she accepts, setting up the scene for so many amazing moments to come.

I love a fake relationship romance, add kids to the situation, and I was sold! And as they all move in together, living as husband and wife, it’s a great set-up for the story, and I couldn’t wait to see how it would all play out.

Anna and Mason are fantastic together. I loved Anna as a character. After a traumatic childhood, her life fell apart through no fault of her own, and she’s been through hell, but she’s pulled herself out of it and has gotten her life together, and her bravery and perseverance is so impressive. And Mason! *dreamy sigh*. Wow, what a man. He’s been through his own trauma and created a good life, but the big, strong badass is lonely for more, and he wants it with Anna. Watching him open himself up completely to Anna and the kids is absolutely heartmelting, and I adored seeing him be there for her without question.

I pulled her into my arms. She might break for a moment, but I refused to let her fall.

The romance is a slow burn, with Anna and Mason developing a friendship before anything else happens. The chemistry burns between them from the very beginning, though,, and the sense of anticipation is palpable just waiting for something to happen. And with Mason gently encouraging Anna every step of the way, I loved every spine-tingling moment of it.

His fingers trailed down my neck and slipped beneath my hair. “This isn’t a favour, Anna. It’s so much more. I think you know that.”

The kids are a big part of the story, and they so sweet. Their relationships with Anna and Mason develop beautifully, and the moments with all four of them together are so special.

But in the meantime, they are in the fight of their lives trying to keep their newfound family together. And there is more than one person out there who isn’t happy at the idea of them as a couple. There is drama and suspense, and characters that you will loathe, but it creates a wonderful sense of tension that kept me madly flipping pages, and I read until the early hours of the morning, desperate to see how it was all going to work out.

I was his, and he was mine. And I wasn’t letting go.

This is a great read, full of feels and I could not put it down. The characters are irresistible, the family drama is wonderfully written, and the romance completely stole my heart.

I loved it! 4.5 stars.
