Abby went through a horrible divorce that almost ruined her life and she doesn’t want to get married again. She isn’t even interested in a relationship until she can get back on her feet with nothing hanging over her head. Rex is a football player who is known as “Training Wheels.” Anytime he dates someone, when they break up, the next guy in the woman’s life turns out to be “the one.” He’s tired of never finding his own happy ending and ends up in the bar where Abby works.

At the end of the night when it is clear that Rex is drunk with no one to call, Abby takes care of him. Even if he doesn’t remember her, she remembers him, and it’s not because he is a professional football player. Rex and Abby went to school together and Abby had the biggest crush on him.

When Rex asks her to play his fake fiancé and actually marry him to help him out, she realizes that it would be a mutually beneficial and she can’t say no. She just didn’t know that the feelings she used to have would come rushing back as she gets to know Rex as an adult.

This is one of the best fake marriage stories I’ve read. It’s entertaining, sweet, and so swoony, and there is a fantastic balance of lighthearted fun and seriousness. The characters are well developed, and the feels are real. I understood exactly where both Abby and Rex were coming from and loved them both individually and as a couple.

I enjoyed watching their friendship bloom and the way the story unfolds. It’s a delicious slow burn romance that is well paced and happens naturally. The sexual tension builds and when they finally give into the feelings that have been growing, they give us some steamy sexy times. There is no drama for the sake of drama, and I loved that they were mature and able to be themselves with each other. They are just so great together and the epilogue is icing on the cake. I couldn’t get enough of these two and loved this story!

This is the first book in a new series of standalones and it has made me so excited for more!! I am hoping to get Cyrus’s story next because that guy is awesome. I loved his character and the role he played in the story!

Overall, I loved Homecoming King. It is a new favorite and a fantastic first book in a fun new series. I can’t wait for more!
