The third book in Samantha Young’s Seven Kings of Jinn series, this book was originally published as Borrowed Ember (Fire Spirits, #3), but like the others in the series, it’s been re-edited and re-released, and it’s a really exciting instalment in the series.

I can’t say much about the story without being spoilery, but Ari’s story continues as we catch up with her, Jai and Charlie as they face up to the consequences of Charlie’s actions, and then finally get the chance to settle into something that looks a little bit like normal – well, a new normal training and working with the Guild to hunt down rogue jinn.

But every challenge they face threatens to unleash the darkness inside of Ari that she is only just beginning to understand. Similarly, Charlie is coming in to his own and starting to realise all that he is capable of, but he’s still wrestling with his feelings, and is starting to lose himself to his quest for vengeance.

And to the excitement of romance fans everywhere, we finally get some movement on the Ari/Jai situation! Yes, feelings have been acknowledged and are being confessed, and it’s gorgeously swoony and emotional as they finally find their way to each other.

“I’ll only ever belong to you If you want me, I’ll belong to you forever.”

“You’re everything,” he admitted, his words ragged with feeling. “You know that, right?”

The story continues to twist and turn, and as secrets are revealed and the powerful jinn begin to make their moves, everything changes and the direction of the series shifts again. Our brave trio find themselves facing danger, betrayal, vengeance, death and loss, and there are a lot of shocks and surprises along the way. It’s an emotional rollercoaster, and I was holding my breath more than once as it all unfolded.

It’s been a wild ride already, and I know there is more in store, and I can’t wait to see how the series will finish in the next book.

3.5 stars.
